Calumet was formed in Phoenix, AZ, in 2001 by Eric 'ET'
Mobley (vocals/guitar/keys) and Jason 'JJ Mitchell (guitar/bass) with Ian
'Eon' White (bass) and Brandon Amos (drums). Over the next two years the
lineup would change to include Chris 'Basshead' Starks (bass) and Joel
'Boodat' Phillips (drums).
They began as a funk and soul cover band and then started to write their
own songs. Their debut album "Retro Energy" manifested in 2002 followed by "The Musical Brothers of Calumet" and "Rock Soul Funkateers" (2008) before the band went on hiatus in 2009.
Calumet was reformed in 2018 by Eric Mobley and Jason Mitchell with new
members Josh Prior (bass/guitar), Jeff Pivin (drums), Rich Cross, plus
early members Ian White (now on percussion) and Marvin Scott (sax)
rejoining. They released and EP "It’s What You Do" in 2019 and another album "Life In Transition" in 2020.
The album "The Musical Brothers of Calumet" has appeared on DSPs today (26 Feb 2022), which I assume is a reissue
from the noughties, although I can find no trace of it being released
previously so perhaps it was recorded in the noughties but
unreleased?
I'm really enjoying this album, full of authentic, funky, retro 70s
tunes. I can't specifically highlight any standouts as they are all of equal quality if you appreciate the early to mid 70s funky vibe, but perhaps "Just Do It" is just doing it for me!
