Buddy Smith [2022] - When You Lose The One You Love (Alternate Version) / You Get What You Deserve [Cannoball #CBLL037]

The next offering from Albert Zanini's Cannonball is a reissue of an all time classic rare soul 45 by Buddy Smith.  The 'killer' side is "When You Lose The One You Love" (a long time favourite) which I could never actually afford to own on original vinyl (on Brut released in 1967), even if I could find one. There are only four listed sales on Popsike with a top selling price of  £3,710. Fortunately for us mere mortals it has been reissued on vinyl a couple of times by Goldmine Soul Supply in 1996 and Detroit-A-Go-Go in 2017. It has also featured on a CD in 2007 Charles 'Buddy' Smith "Resurrection".

"When You Lose The One You Love"  is a previously unreleased alternate version. The other side is "You Get What You Deserve" which is not posted on YouTube except for a live clip from 2013.

It is worth noting (from the Cannonball write up) that the song was originally credited on the original release to Tony Clarke ("Landslide" etc.), as he owned the Brut label but was in fact written by Buddy and the record has been put straight on the latest release labels. Clarke also took credit for writing the only other release on the label by The Tokays. Curiously there is a third release on the label by Yvonne Vernee (of The Elgins) which is dated 2018 on both Discogs and 45Cat, which appears to be an issue of a previously unreleased track (one side is an instrumental version of her 1965 Northern Soul tune "Just Like You Did Me" on SonBert), and you guessed it, Clarke's name is on writing credits.

Buddy is from Detroit and is still performing to this day (check out his facebook page below). Discogs has singles listed for him from the mid 50s which almost certainly isn't the same artist, as even if he was only twenty then, that would make him 87 now! I believe that the Brute single is the only one he recorded.
