Joe Blue [2021] - Feelings [Self Released]

You may have noticed that there have been very few new releases posted for several days. To give you an inkling as to why then just take a listen to the sort of garbage I have to sift through to bring you the choice cuts. I apologise in advance as this is just incredulous to think that anyone would believe that this was anywhere near good enough to try to sell!

I've included a link to Amazon on image below should anyone wish to buy it for Christmas for someone they really don't like or is tone deaf! Truly dreadful!

Also a lot of the new releases that I've managed to find that are any good don't seem to have been uploaded to Spotify, presumably because of the run up to Christmas?

R.I.P. Paul Mitchell (The Floaters)

Yet more sad news as it is being reported that Paul Mitchell of The 70s group The Floaters has died yesterday (20 Dec 2021). He was the brother of James Mitchell of The Detroit Emeralds, who has rekindled the group and they have just released a new single "Face 2 Face" only a few weeks ago.
The Floaters were a group from Detroit founded by Annie Mitchell (James and Paul's mother) and Larry Cunningham. James Mitchell was their producer and agent. The group's line-up was Paul Mitchell (James' brother), Larry Cunningham, Charles Clark and Ralph Mitchell (not related to the other Mitchells). Jonathan 'Mighty Midget' Murray joined them in 1978 (included in photo below).

Most will know their worldwide smash hit in 1977 "Float Onwritten by James Mitchell, Marvin Willis and Arnold Ingram which was originally intended to be the debut album title. They had two further R&B chart entries with the follow up, an 'over-egged' cover of Dusty Springfield's biggest hit "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", and just missed the Hot 100 with "I Just Want To Be With You" (#104) in 1978. However, they recorded four albums between 1977-81, the last one as Floaters and Shu-Ga in 1981.

One of their best singles was the next one consisting of two very nice ballads "The Time Is Now" and "Let's Try Love (One More Time)" both featured on their second album "Magic" but it somehow failed to register. Unfortunately for the group, at the time of the album's release, ABC were in the process of being sold to MCA so it probably lacked the sufficient promotion it deserved. The album's title track is another 'epic', 9:49 mins on album and almost 12 mins on 12", and is similar in construct to "Float On", although it did get a 7" edit in UK only. Another recommended cut is "For Your Love" which came out twice on Fee.

Larry Cunningham and Ralph Mitchell left the group before the last album and were replaced by local female vocalist Shu-Ga. They reunited in 1990 but Charles Clark left to become a gospel singer and Paul Mitchell to produce. An original member who left prior to their 1977 success, Robert Palmer (no not that one - 'Some Guys Have All The Luck'!), re-joined Cunningham and Ralph Mitchell and continued to perform live and recorded an EP "The Way We Were". Founding member Larry Cunningham died on 10 Jan 2019 aged 67 after a long illness.

The EP included a nice version of "Loveland" credited to Charles Wright and Don Trotter (Charles Wright And The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band) in 1969. However, I'm sure I've read in comments on YouTube that in fact legendary drummer, and band member, James Gadson claims that he wrote the song and as a 'protest' recorded his own version under the title "Got To Find My Baby" in 1972. On this recording, writing credits are shared with one Ciola Wills aka Viola Mae Wilkerson aka Viola Wills who was discovered by Barry White and recorded several singles on his Bronco label in the mid 60s, as well as performing backing vocals on many others, before 'going disco' in the 70s. Spanky Wilson recorded her faster version of it on "Let It Be" in 1970 not to be confused with a song of the same title on her previous album "Doin' It" which is a different, but superb, song, also released as a single. Don Trotter And The Eighth Wonder also recorded it in 1969 as a B side on Josie (I'm not able to find a sound file for it so if you would like to share it I will post it on my YouTube channel).

There's no playlist this time as the only tracks available on Spotify are all on the first album and a link is provided below. Links are also provided for most of the singles and album tracks, any help with missing tracks greatly appreciated.

UPDATE Many thanks to Paul Regan and DJ Kool Keith for sending the missing tracks as that now completes their full discography. I'll upload to my YouTube channel and link to them. The only remaining one is the B side to their 1980 single on Fee "Glass House" as the current sound file on YouTube is very lo-fi so if anyone could help with that it would be appreciated.

Also thanks to the Mitchell family and their representatives for graciously assisting in this tribute at this very difficult time and sincere condolences to all family and friends.

Gwen McCrae - A Profile...

Today it's the turn of Gwen McCrae (nee Mosley) to be in the spotlight as she is celebrating her 78th birthday (21 Dec 1943). She was married to George McCrae who she met in 1963 when he was in the navy and they married within a week of meeting. They began singing together as a duo and were discovered in 1967 by Betty Wright, who coincidentally shares the same birthday, albeit Betty was born exactly ten years later in 1953, who helped secure a record deal for them with Henry Stone's Alston label. They recorded three singles as a duo between 1966-70. There was an in depth feature on Betty Wright posted after her sudden and unexpected death in May 2020 Discography and R.I.P. Betty Wright.
Aston leased Gwen's contract to Columbia where she released her first solo single in 1970 which was a cover of Bobby Bland's "Lead Me On". After her next four singles on Columbia failed to chart (including the first recording of the song made famous by Elvis "You Are Always On My Mind") Columbia declined to renew the contract so she moved back to T.K. where her next single was on Glades and also released on T.K.'s Cat label.

Gwen was scheduled to record the vocals for a song written by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch of K.C. & The Sunshine Band, as they couldn't reach the high notes, but she was late for the session and husband George stepped in with his falsetto vocals and recorded his debut solo single. That song, "Rock Your Baby", went on to be a worldwide smash hit in July 1974 selling over ten million copies. It is regarded as one of the earliest disco hits. Having already released four singles on Cat, Gwen's next recording was an answer song "Rocking Chair" which also did very well reaching #1 R&B and #9 Hot 100. They recorded another song influenced by "Rock Your Baby" together in 1976 "I'll Do The Rockin'" which failed to make any impact on the charts. The couple divorced the same year, I wonder if it had anything to do with George 'stealing' her song?

Neither of them surpassed this success, whilst seven of Gwen's twelve records on Cat between 1973-79 made the R&B charts, she didn't achieve another hot 100 hit. George did have another five hot 100 entries, the highest being #37 with "I Get Lifted" which was the follow up to "Rock Your Baby". I think it's fair to say that he was more successful in the UK achieving seven UK Top 40 pop hits in 1975-76 and another two in the Top 100 in the 80s.

T.K. records went bankrupt in 1981 (the co-founder Henry Stone died in 2014 aged 93) and Gwen moved from Florida to New Jersey and signed to Atlantic in 1981. She hit with her first recording "Funky Sensation" followed by the UK club classic "Keep The Fire Burning" in 1983 penned by the great Willie Hutch. In 1984 she returned to Florida and recorded a one-off single for Black Jack records which got into the lower reaches on the R&B chart.

It wasn't until 1996 that she recorded again with two albums, one on GoldWax and another for the UK market on Homegrown which gained a US release on Ichiban in 1998. A few albums followed in 1999, a gospel album in 2004, a live album recorded in Paris in 2005 and an album of covers of TK hits in 2006.

Sadly, after performing on stage in the UK in June 2012, she suffered a stroke in her hotel room resulting in paralysis to the left side of her body which rendered her unable to walk.

Her daughter, Leah, continues the McCrae legacy who is a solo artist and also a member of a group named Daughters Of Soul which includes  Nona Hendryx (LaBelle), Joyce Kennedy (Mother's Finest), Deniece Williams, Caron Wheeler (Soul II Soul), Lalah Hathaway (Donny Hathaway's daughter), Indira Khan (Chaka Khan's daughter), Simone (Nina Simone's daughter).

As always, I've included a playlist of some of her best recordings from what is available on Spotify and links to sound files for all her singles (A & B sides) that I can find.

The Gwen McCrae soundclip is quite lo-fi but there is another version of the song by Carol Smith

She did release more singles in the 90s/00s and became known as 'The Queen of Rare Groove' in the UK, but many of them were house/garage remixes of her hits which are probably of no interest to soulies, so I've not included them.

Brothers By Choice [2021] - Brothers By Choice [Golden Boy] (Full Album)

The Brothers By Choice only, self-titled, album from 1978 has been reissued digitally on 26 Nov 2021. They are well know in modern soul circles for their 1978 single "She Puts The Ease Back Into Easy".

A funny story, I bought, what I thought was, the single at a weekender many years ago without doing my homework and when I got it home to play it realised that it was the instrumental version (didn't state that on the label!). What a disappointment, although all was not lost as it has a good version of the Ambrosia hit "How Much I Feel" on the flip side which isn't on the original album but is included in the digital reissue and the CD reissue from 2014. I think I now prefer it to "Easy". The song was written by the Ambrosia's guitarist David Pack and reached #3 on Hot 100 in 1978. It was covered by UK duo Alibi (Kye and Jud Mahoney) in 1998 reaching #53 on UK pop chart.

Brothers By Choice were a group from L.A. who released six singles between 1975-80. Prior to that they were called The Gliders who released three singles on three different labels between 1972-78 and also released a single on yet another label as Fire And Fury in 1977.
