Move Me No Mountain - A Version Excursion

"Move Me No Mountain" is a song written by Jerry Ragovoy and Aaron Schroeder originally recorded in 1974 by Love Unlimited. Dionne Warwick's version in 1975, released as a single (UK only) from her "Then Came You" album, used a slightly different melody in the song's chorus which is the variation that was covered by Chaka Khan in 1980 on "Naughty".

Hank Crawford recorded a more up-tempo instrumental version in 1975 on his "I Hear A Symphony" album.

Soul II Soul released multiple different mixes of it as a single in 1992. More recently there have been a couple of jazz covers by Rigmor Gustafsson and The Jacky Terrasson Trio in 2004 and Quiana Lynell in 2019.

A producer called 9th Wonder (Patrick Denard Douthit) has sampled it on a couple of occasions as Median on "Maglife" in 2007 and then on "AllYouGot" on "Lost Beats Volume 3" in 2009.

Coincidentally, 9th Wonder also produced the track "Real Love" on Anthony Hamilton's latest album "Love Is The New Black" .. which, as if by synchronicity, also samples Ahmad Jamal's "Swahililand" which was sampled by Dave Lee for "Far Beyond" just covered by Lance Ferguson and posted earlier today ... you couldn't make it up!

NB This post was inspired by Dionne Warwick's version played today by Gary Van Den Bussche on his lunchtime show on Starpoint radio.

Dames Brown Feat. Andrés & Amp Fiddler [2021] - What Would You Do? [Defected Records]

This one escaped on Friday (12 Nov 2021) and just try putting it back in the box.  It's a JAM, try keeping still to this! My immediate thought is that it harps back to James Brown and Marv Whitney style tunes.

Dames Brown are Athena Johnson (who replaced Jael Coston), LaRae Starr (aka Lisa Cunningham) and Teresa Marbury from Detroit who have been laying it down since their debut "Soul Fly" in 2013 written and produced by Joseph 'Amp' Fiddler. They are assisted on their latest release "What Would You Do?" by fellow Detroiter Amp Fiddler and Andrés.

I've included an interview with some video clips of them performing by Timmy Tim WDET 109.9 FM

I've been thinking about what this tune reminded me of and I think it's "You Got To Have A Job" from Marva Whitney & James Brown (1969), or perhaps Marva Whitney "What Do I Have To Do To Prove My Love To You" (1968).

Lance Ferguson [2021] - Far Beyond [Freestyle]

You may, or may not, be familiar with Lance Ferguson. He is the leader of Aussie band The Bamboos and wrote the popular tune "This Girl" for Cookin' On 3 Burners.

He's a guitarist, songwriter, producer and DJ originally from New Zealand now based in Melbourne. In 2019 he produced an album "Rare Groove Spectrum" which, as the title implies, is a collection of re-imaginings of rare groove and classic soul tracks.

The second volume ("Rare Groove Spectrum, Vol. 2") drops on 28 Jan 2022 but as a taster he's pre-released (12 Nov) a cover of The Sunburst Band's (Dave Lee aka Joey Negoro) "Far Beyond" which was released in 2004.  In turn Dave Lee sampled a 1974 album track by Ahmad Jamal "Swahililand" from "Jamal Plays Jamal".

The S.O.S. Band [2021] - Just Get Ready (Michael Gray Remix) [High Fashion Music]

A new single from The S.O.S. Band "Just Get Ready (Michael Gray Remix)" is due for release on 26 Nov 2021. I was surprised to find it already being streamed on Spotify.

I think technically it's a re-issue as it was released in 2017 and remixed by Ben Leibrand with another mix by Micheal Gray, so I don't know whether this is the same Michael Gray mix or a new one.

UPDATE Just been told that it's a new mix.
