Mulvey's Medicine & Jolyn Feat. Grace Walker [2021] - Say Goodbye [Bridge The Gap]

I'm feeling this one, definitely one of the best tracks of the week so far, although it was released on 16 Jul 2021. They premiered a video for it last Friday (23 Jul).

Mulvey's Medicine are a seven-piece band from South East London named after Eddie Mulvey, guitarist/vocalist and presumably the band leader. They draft in musicians as and when needed for each project.

Since their debut single in 2018 they've released a total of six singles and a full length album "Ignite" in 2018.

Their latest single "Say Goodbye" features one of the song's writers, Dutch born/London-based, Jolyn (Jolijn Goethals), who wrote the lyrics, and Grace Walker who does a superb job on vocals (although I notice that she is not credited on the Spotify playlist - a glaring error as she makes this track!).

They are lined-up to perform at the legendary Ronnie Scott's on 11 Oct 2021, having already performed there in Aug 2019.

Gigi Santella Feat. John Moss 2020] - Dwindling Flame [Santella & Sons]

Blue-eyed Italian retro soul from Gigi Santella who now lives in L.A. His latest release "Dwindling Flame" is his third single (if you include "Dwindling Flame Prelude in C" (1:07) as a single!), all released this year and features John Moss (who I can find nothing about).

The new single, released 23 Jul 2021, has a 60s throwback feel. His YT channel has a video of studio rehearsals and features a black male quartet called True Devotion / The Original King’s of Compton.

Jack Bowman [2021] - Live Session Ep.01 Champagne [Self Released]

I'd never heard of Jack Bowman until this popped up on my YT feed. I only have one word to say "FONKEEEE" ... try keeping still to this!

He is English and apparently he is a drummer, singer/rapper, producer, composer and arranger who has been supporting other artists, but has now decided to focus on his own career.

"Champagne" was originally released last April (3 Apr 2020). He has released a live recording of it on YT on 23 Jul 2021, and with the way it's titled (i.e. Live Session EP. 01) it looks like there may be more to come. The video was recorded in Paris using French musicians.

The backing singers (or perhaps it's the song/bassline) for some reason remind me of Jack Tyson Charles single "Love Is Pain" from earlier this year.

Yoyo Priant [2021] - Plans (EP) [Discofunktion Records]

(Yolene) Yoyo Priant is a new artist from Tucson, AZ who has just released her debut (six track) EP "Plans" (25 Jul 2021) which includes both of her previous singles "Made" and "Roll Wit Me" released earlier this year.

The only track of interest is "Foundation" as, is often the case, the remaining tracks are all R&B/hip-hop. I don't wish to be over critical, but the vocals sound a bit flat in places, but it's got a good groove! It reminds me of things TLC were doing back in the day.

Ike & Tina Turner [2021] - Bold Soul Sister / Somebody (Somewhere) Needs You (2021 Remaster) [Good Time Records]

It's talcum time again! Good Time Records, the same outfit who re-issued Charles Mitchell's 1973 single posted yesterday, have also remastered and reissued a Northern Soul track covered by a few artists which has a backing track that has also been used on several other recordings.

Ike & Tina Turner were the first to record the song, credited to Frank Wilson, in 1965 on Loma. The following year another two versions materialised. Darrell Banks cut a version on Revilot, now credited to Marc Gordon in addition to Wilson, and another version on Loma, from Larry Laster called "Go For Yourself" which used the same backing track but different lyrics credited to Leon Sylvers.

The following year (1967) Ty Karim released "Lighten Up Baby" which used the backing again on Car-A-Mel, but with new lyrics attributed to her husband Kent Harris. Larry Atkins released another version of the same song credited to Harris on Highland in 1968.

Also in 1968, Herb (Sadler) & Doris (Dorsey) did "Somebody (Somewhere) Needs You" on Hip and white Canadian group The Mid Knights also recorded a more garage version of it on Warner Bros.

If you want to listen to the versions above, they were featured in a write up on Ty Karim posted last year.

There's a couple of more versions I omitted last time. One by another white Canadian artist Natalie Baron in 1967 (which I've not heard but would guess it's a pop version?). The other is a pop version by a group called West who released it on their 1969 album "Bridges". So that's nine versions so far! There may well be others I've omitted, if you know of one let me know.

Live In Texas
(or is it - doesn't sound very live to me, it sounds very similar to the studio version apart from the 'canned' applause at the start!)

Bastido [2021] - Sera [Self Released] (Full EP)

Bastido (aka Bastian Kladny) was born in Germany and now resides in Barcelona. He released a new six track EP "Sera" on 23 Jul 2021. He classifies his music as jazz-based hip-hop beats, with the latest EP defined as Neo-Soul, Jazz-Hop and Alternative R&B.

A few of the tracks are jazz guitar instrumentals ("Serenade", "Calabrun" and "Escur"). "Summer Blues" and "Color Me In" I find a bit poppy, but the best track is the 'bouncy'  "Can't Help Myself" which features US singer Bradlee (Vaoifi Taisi).
