Bey Bright [2021] - He Can’t Love You [Bright Vision Entertainment]

I'm hoping for a bumper set of releases in the next day or so as this week has been pretty lean for quality music as is evident from what has been posted this week.  Fortunately we still have the spoils of two weeks ago, when there was so much good stuff released at the start of June, to feast on.

The one featured here wouldn't be on my playlist as it's too R&B oriented, but as there's not much else around here goes.

I notice he has also just released a remix of "Love Zone" from his last EP "Soul Nostalgia 3", which is better than this one to my ears.

Bey Bright [2021] - Love Zone (Remix) [Bright Vision Entertainment]

The second single released on the same day (11 Jun 2021) by Bey Bright on his Bright Vision Entertainment label. It's a remix of a track that first appeared on his "Soul Nostalgia 3" EP released in Jan.

I think I actually prefer the original (more soulful) version, so I've posted both versions for comparison.

Jon Batiste [2021] - Freedom [Verve]

Jon Batiste has just released a video of "Freedom" taken from his latest album "We Are" which would suggest that it's lined up to be the next single. It has a feel of Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" to my ears.

The video has a retro 70s look and is set in New Orleans where he is from. He debuted in 2005 aged 18 and has released seven albums to date. He won Academy Award for Best Original Score for Pixar's animated comedy "Soul".

Claire Davis [2021] - Thrive EP [Magnephonic Records]

Retro soul singer from Toronto, Claire Davis, releases a debut five track EP on 16 Jul 2021.  She's already released two singles this year, "Playground" in Apr. and "Heartbreak" in Feb. Both singles appear on the EP which was recorded in analogue to tape to try and achieve an authentic retro sound.

The other tracks are "Can't Move On" and "What's Done Is Done", both southern country/soul style ballads, and the title track "Thrive", probably the best track on the EP, which is a neo/retro mid pacer in a similar vein to Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.

Last year she released two singles, both covers, "Chained", written by Frank Wilson and recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1968 as the single before "Heard It Through The Grapevine" and "Vacuum", a funky Isley Brothers song released in 1971.

She is lead singer of seven-piece Toronto funk outfit "YUKA" who she recorded two albums with. They have opened for several artists including Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Lee Fields & The Expressions and Claire has performed with Martha Reeves & The Vandellas.
