Jenevieve [2021] - Medallion / Baby Powder / Eternal [Joyface Records PS]

Jenevieve is 22 and was born and raised in Miami but now lives in L.A. She released 'Medallion' as her debut single in Feb last year but it has reappeared with a release date of 21 Apr 2021, which I think is a 'clean' version of the original 'explicit' version. 

She followed up 'Medallion' with 'Baby Powder' in March 2020 (again re-released on 21 Mar 2021) and has just released her latest single 'Eternal' on 12 May 2021, which veers too much towards R&B from my personal taste, but I'll post it as well as some may like it.

B.B. Zillions [2021] - M.M.L. (Money, Music, Love) [Goodgirl Badgirl Entertainment]

A debut album from B.B. Zillions from Syracuse, NY, although she may have released it as an EP last year (as it's on her SoundCloud from then) and extended it to a full album.

The album is contemporary neo soul/R&B/hip-hop. There are a few nice tracks including 'Drip', 'Triangle' and 'After', but avoid 'Now', 'Rodeo' and Drip Remix' if you are adverse to rapping!

It looks like a self-released debut, hence I can find no information on her.

Aaron Frazer [2021] - Over You / Have Mercy [Colemine #CLMN-198]

A new vinyl 7" with two tracks taken from Aaron Frazer's debut album 'Introducing...' released in Jan this year. Aaron is a member of Durand Jones & The Indications (drummer/singer).

The A side is a neo Northern Soul tune with the flip being one for the lowriders with a retro sweet soul tune, which I prefer, as the A side for me doesn't quite feel authentic enough, but then I may be just being a 'purist'.

It's due out on 16 Jul 2021 but pre-orders are now being taken.

Neo Northern Soul / Crossover Playlist

It's that time of the week when the 'newbies' dry up, so it'll probably be a partly retro day today.

To kick things off here's a tracklist put together of new Northern Soul/Crossover tracks. The criteria are that they must all be new songs, not covers, reissues or unreleased vintage tracks, that have a retro NS/XO feel and have been released in the last twelve months. 

For example Alexander Morris' version of Ronnie McNeir's 'Isn't She A Pretty Girl', unfortunately doesn't qualify as it's obviously a new cover version, Eddie Holman 'Ready Willing & Able' is an unreleased vintage track and reissues speak for themselves.

Also, as it's a Spotify playlist, they must have been released digitally and be available on Spotify - I know that's an anachronism for many, but welcome to the 21st century! I've cobbled together about 18 tracks so far (71 mins). There are probably some I've missed or forgotten about, so if you feel something should be included then please leave a comment and, if it meets the criteria, I'll add it.

Carmy Love [2021] - Rebel / Thinkin' About You [Big A.C]

EXCLUSIVE - Full version of Carmy Love's new track 'Rebel'

Carmy Love's 'Thinkin' About You' was released digitally on 26 Mar 2021 (posted here 27 Mar) and did well, reaching #8 on the Global Soul chart, but the vinyl 7" is yet to be released and was due 28 May 2021 and is now delayed until 15 Jun 2021 owing to delays at the pressing plant. 

Big AC records has decided to put it out as the B side to a track titled 'Rebel' and have released a sound clip 'teaser' of it which sounds pretty good too from the mere 30 second clip. So I contacted Big AC and asked if I could post the full version, which they agreed to with the proviso that it is switched to Spotify when released on 28 May 2021 (now done).

The vinyl release is limited to 500 copies and, with the success of 'Thinkin' Of You' and hearing a soundclip of 'Rebel', I'm pretty sure this will sell out, possibly on pre-orders alone, so I would recommend pre-ordering to avoid disappointment (link on images) as this will inevitably end up on Discogs for double the price, or more, once they are sold out!

'Rebel' will be available to download from all the main digital outlets (pre-order here) if you are unfortunate to miss out on the vinyl release.

Carmy Love is from North West London and was a member of acid jazz group from London New Street Adventure (NSA). Prior to that she recorded on 'Just Dance' with Cool Million in 2010 on their 'Back For More' album.

NSA band leader Nick Corbin owns Big AC records with his wife Sophie Heath. NSA disbanded when Nick decided to become independent, breaking away from the Acid Jazz label to focus on a solo career. He has released an album 'Sweet Escape' and several singles (available on vinyl from Big AC). He wrote 'Thinkin' About You' as well as other material for artists on the label.
