The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 5 (Apr 2021 Wk 14)

My selection of this week's best cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples (Apr 2021 Wk 14). (In no particular order)

Gene & Eddie [1970] - You've Got To Love Me Sometimes [Mon'ca #52670]

Another one difficult to 'pigeon hole', just a fabulous piece of soul music which should appeal to anyone who appreciates music for what it is. From the same Washington D.C. label that gave us the wonderful record by The Differences (posted a few days ago), but only another four releases besides these two.

Gene (Eugene Dorsett) & Eddie (Best Jr.) released six singles on Baltimore's Ru-Jac label between 1968-71. This single, for some reason, was also released on Mon'ca and their third Ru-Jac single 'It's So Hard' was a re-recorded version of a doo-wop version they released on Tonjo 556 as Eddie & Gene & The Nitecaps. There's a soundclip of both versions on SirShambling if you're interested in comparing them.

Vinyl Release due for Al Lindsey Feat. Laura Rain [2021] - Claim It

Fantastic news! Regular readers of the blog will already know that I contacted Al Lindsey last month to request his permission to post his, as then, unreleased track on my YouTube channel so that I could share it with you on the blog.

Coincidentally, I had been speaking with MD Records the same week on another matter and mentioned that I had been in touch with Al and had asked him if he had plans to release the single on vinyl, at which time he was considering it. I asked MD if they would be interested in releasing the track and then asKed Al if he'd like to discuss it with them, and they have now signed a contract for MD to release the track on vinyl. They have just announced on their facebook page that the record 'should' be available in 8 weeks (owing to the current climate).  They will be taking pre-orders on their website but preference will be given to members signed up on their website so if you want to be at the front of the queue (and be notified of all future releases) it would be worthwhile singing up - it's free.

The 100 Greatest Motown Songs

On 30th March Rolling Stone magazine published an article featuring The Greatest 100 Motown Songs.  It's worth a read and there are links to YT clips for all 100.

Undoubtedly you will have your own favourites which may or may not be in the list or not as high in the list as you think. One of my all-time favourite Motown tracks 'This Old Heart Of Mine' by The Isleys is only at 37!  All lists of this nature will be contensous as unless it is based on sales (which it isn't), the choices are subjective, and in this case it is US biased as if it was a UK chart I would guess there would be many more traditional Motown 60s songs listed.

An entry that jumps out at me is the inclusion of DeBarge at 41 with 'Time Will Reveal' - how many remember that tune? It did make #1 R&B #18 Hot 100 in U.S. but did nothing in UK. I honestly don't ever recall ever hearing it.  There are also some glaring omissions, and I'm working on an alternative 100 of songs that are not in the list that perhaps should be.

Here's the full list, I'm not linking them as they are already linked in the Rollong Stone article link above.

Roy Lee Johnson & The Villagers [1973] - I Can't Stand This Loneliness [Stax #STS 3020] (Full Album)

An album only track from Roy Lee Johnson & The Villagers released on their only, self-titled, album on Stax in 1973. The group disbanded not long after the recording of the album due to the death of bass player Michael James. They released just one single, a funk tune 'The Dryer (Parts 1 & 2), both sides are on the album.

The rest of the album is mainly funk, although 'Something Special' is a good southern style soul ballad/stepper and 'Midnight At Rileys' is a cool, mid-tempo, funky/latin, instrumental. The featured track is a driving, funky, Northern Soul tune.

Listen to Full Album here.

The album was reissued on CD in 2010 and vinyl in 2017.

Roy Lee Johnson had a solo career before and after the band between 1962-1978. A couple of other tracks of interest for NS devotees include 'Boogaloo #3' (Josie 1966), 'Guitar Man' (Philips 1967). Most of his other material was blues or raw deep soul.

Barbara Lewis [1970] - The Stars [Enterprise #ENS 1006]

This was an album only track until it was released on Ady Croasdell's Horace's label in 1991 (Ady's nickname was Harboro Horace, hence the label name) with the glorious Carla Thomas 'I'll Never Stop Loving You' on the flip. It has also been reissued on Sundae Soul as their first release in 2005.

The track was featured on 'The Many Grooves Of Barbara Lewis' album in 1970 and was written by Don Mancha using the pseodonym Don Juan (Juan being his middle name).

The 1991 Horace's reissue 45 now fetches almost three times more money than the original album in the crazy world of Northern Soul.

The Carla Thomas track on the flip has been issued five times, twice in 1991 (Kent 6Ts anniversary single & Horace's), 2003 (Kent), 2009 (Kent) & 2017 (Stax). It first appears on a 1991 Carla Thomas Stax compilation CD 'Hidden Gems'.

Danny Toeman [2019] - She's Got Something About Her / Give It All Up (Mr. Showtime) [Delmonico / LRK Records]

Danny Toeman, a blue-eyed singer from North London, released this in Jul 2019 and then St Ives, Cambs, based LRK Records released it on vinyl in Jul 2020 (now sold out).  It has an authentic retro sound.

Two great sides.

She's Got Something About Her

Give It All Up

The Chants [1976] - I've Been Trying [Chipping Norton #CHIP 2]

A superb crossover tune from The Chants written by Chris & Eddie Amoo. Eddie was a member of The Chants who joined his brother Chris in The Real Thing the same year and they went on to have a #1 hit with 'You To Me Are Everything' followed by a string of eight UK Top 40 hits until 1980.

Freddie Hughes v Lonnie Hewitt - Got To Keep My Bluff In

A song written by Lonnie Hewitt but recorded first by Freddie Hughes on Wand. Hewitt later released it on his Wee label in 1977 with a short (3:05) and long (4:20) version. It's the long (album) version featured below which was on his 1977 album 'Keepin' It Together'.

Freddie Hughes [1968/69] - I Got To Keep My Bluff In [Wand #WND 1192/1197]

This track was released twice by Hughes, first in 1968 as the B side to 'Natural Man' (his version of Aretha's classic). and then as an A side in 1969. It was written, arranged and produced by Lonnie Hewitt.

Lonnie Hewitt [1977] - I Gotta' Keep My Bluff In [Wee #484]

Archie Bell & The Drells [1968] - When You Left Heartache Began / A Thousand Wonders [Atlantic #SC 8181]

Two superb album only crossover tracks from their debut album 'Tighten Up'.  'A Thousand Wonders' did actually get a 45 release, but only in Spain on the flip side to 'Tighten Up' and was reissued in UK in 2004 with 'Here I Go Again' on flip.  Only three tracks on the album were issued on 45: 'Tighten Up Pts 1 & 2' and 'Soldier's Plea'.

The T.S.U.Tornadoes originally released 'A Thousand Wonders' on Houston label Ovide in 1967. It was written by one of the members Cal Thomas. They were Ovide's house band (named after their school, Texas Southern University, and favourite car the Oldsmobile Tornado).  Archie Brell & The Drells released their first three singles on Ovide and the T.S.U. Tornadoes were their backing band.

'Tighten Up' was originally a B side on Ovide which was picked up by Atlantic after it was a local hit in Houston. It was a #1 hit on both R&B and Hot 100 (needless to say it failed to even chart in the UK at the time!). They have only had three UK Top 40 singles, and two of these owe much to their Northern Soul exposure. 'Here I Go Again' reached #11 in 1972 but was originally released in US in 1969 (as a B side to 'World Without Music') and  'There's Gonna Be A Showdown' reached #36 in 1973, again orginally released in US in 1968, both got their initial exposure on NS dancefloors. 'Soul City Walk' got to #13 in 1976. Two other singles just missed out on Top 40 positions 'Everybody Have A Good Time' #43 1977 and ' Don't Let Love Get You Down' #49 in 1986 which was a reissue from 1976.

They have, of course, plenty of other quaility tunes only appreciated by soul connoisseurs. A few of the more obscure/lesser known ones to look out for if you're not already familiar with include: (there's loads more but I've tried to list the lesser known ones only).

Atlantic period

1967 - She's My Woman, She's My Girl - sweet soul harmony ballad
1968 - Dog Eat Dog  - this was the A side for the 'Tighten Up' first release on Ovide.
1968 - You're Such A Beautiful Child - B side to I Can't Stop Dancing
1968 - Love Will Rain On You - B side to Do The Choo Choo
1968 - Go For What You Know - B side to Showdown
1969 - Just A Little Closer - B side to I Love My Baby ballad
1969 - My Balloon's Going Up - Gamble & Huff Philly magic
1969 - Girl You're Too Young - anoter Gamble & Huff composition
1969 - Giving Up Dancing - flip to 'Balloon'
1971 - I Just Want To Fall In Love - written by Phillip Mitchell - always a good shout! but it sank without trace not even entering US R&B chart)
1971 - Archie's In Love - another that failed to chart

Glades period

1973 - Dancing To Your Music - this one's had NS spins but not that well known
1973 - Ain't Nothing For A Man In Love - another Phillip Mitchel song
1973 - Girls Grow Up Faster Than Boys - and another Phillip Mitchel song

Philadelphia International period

1976 - Right Here Is Where I Want To Be - B side McFadden & Whitehead & John Carstarphen ballad
1976 - Where Will You Go When The Party's Over - for some reason this was never releaed in US as a single - one of the best Philly dancers released!
1977 - There's No Other Like You - another B side McFadden & Whitehead & John Carstarphen ballad
1977 - It's Hard Not To Like You - a modern soul spin which was a B side and another McFadden & Whitehead had a hand in
1978 - Old People - another that's had modern soul spins
1979 - Show Me How To Dance - a Gambe & Huff modern soul stepper which failed to chart

1987 - Look Back Over Your Shoulder (12" version) - Ian Levine production from 1987

Album only tracks

1968 - I Can't Stop Dancing
I've Been Trying - the Curtis Mayfield song
Sometimes I Wonder - another Curtis Mayfiled song best known by Major Lance on OKeh. they also recorded another Mayfield/Lance outing 'Monkey Time'.

1969 - There's Gonna Be A Showdown

1975 - Dance Your Troubles Away
I Love You (But You Don't Even Know It) - deep soul ballad from pen of McFadden, Whitehead & Carstaphen

1977 - Hard Not To Like You
Real Good Feeling - another that's had modern soul room spins.

1979 - Strategy
How Can I - album only ballad from Strategy
We've Got Something - a storming modern soul Philly dancer. I'm surprised that his was never release as a single.
Tighten Up At The Disco - blatant Disco exploitation and playing on their biggest hit - but it's got a good backing that's let down by the crass lyrics!

J.R. Bailey [1974] - Just Me 'N You [MAM #9] (Full Album)

James Ralph Bailey's solo career may not be that well known but he wrote several hit songs, often with Ken Williams.

He co-wrote with Williams and Rudy Clark, The Main Ingredient's biggest hit 'Everybody Plays The Fool' and also with Williams and Mel Kent 'Let Me Prove My Love For You' which was sampled by Alicia Keys for 'You Don't Know My Name' in 2003.

It is now widely believed that he was also the elusive Chuck Wood who wrote (with Vernon Harrell who was a member of The Coasters in the 60s) and recorded another NS monster 'Seven Days Too Long' on Roulette which sadly gets neglected since it was released as the flip to the infamous 'Footsee' by Wigan's Chosen Few on Pye Disco Demand in 1974, but it is the archetypal 'proper' Northern Soul sound. The same year (1967) he also wrote a big Twisted Wheel tune with Harrell for The Platters 'Sweet, Sweet Lovin'.

Ken Williams had a popular NS tune  with his 1967 OKeh outing 'Come Back' and also as a member of The Superiors with 'What Would I Do' on Verve (which he wrote with another writer with many different credits i.e. as Wood/Ward/Dick Wood/Dick Ward so could this be a psedonym for Bailey?). This group shouldn't be confused with a group with the same name who released 'I'd Rather Die' on Sue who later became the Dynamic Superiors on Motown (as they have been on Discogs).

Some other top songs written by Williams include The Spellbinder's 'Help Me (Get Myself Back Together Again)' (Columbia 1966). Toni Lamarr 'It's Too Late' (Buddah 1967), Peaches & Herb 'Me And You' (Date 1967) with Francine 'Peaches' Hurd/Barker, Sandra Phillips classic 'Hoping You'll Come Back' (OKeh 1968) with an F.P. (Francis Peck) Sturm who I think may actually be Peaches using a pseodonym as nearly al her credits are for Peaches & Herb; Bobby Treetop 'Wait Till I Get To Know Ya' (Tuff 1967), The Fundamentals 'Let Me Show It To You' (OKeh 1967), Total Eclipes 'You Took Our Heart (That Was Torn To Pieces)' (Right On 1970).

Another song he wrote with Williams that he did record in 1972 was 'Love, Love, Love' later recorded by Donny Hathaway in 1973. I've also found an obscure version by Chuck Proffitt on Lar Ron (undated and no sound clip) which sold for £1,233 in Nov 2020.

The song featured here is Just Me 'N You which was album only from the 1974 album of the same name (full album below). It was covered by Eramus Hall in 1980 on their debut album 'Your Love Is My Desire'. The group were named after a building in Chicago by George Clinton. The album was recorded in 1978 but not released until 1980 but very few copies left Detroit making this a particulary rare album selling for up to £500. One of the group members was Joe Anderson who had a big modern soul tune played 'You And Me', (Buddah 1975) the backing of which was used by Ed Summers on 'I Can Tell'  (Soya 1980). (I posted both versions here). P-Funker Garry Shider featured on their second album.

Freddie Hughes [1968] - Send My Baby Back [Wand #WDS 664] (Full Album)

One of my avourite albums from one of my favourites singers, Freddie Hughes. It was reissued in 2010 by those good people at Kent with an extended edition with an additional 14 tracks.

I did a full discography on his singles last year here.  This guy is so under appreciated, and as is still active in the Bay Area.

There is a recent interview with Freddie on KALW in Jan 2020 when he was 76. He was still performing regulartly at the Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge in San Francisco before Covid set in.

Lonnie Hewitt [1969] - Is It Me (Part 1 & 2) [Wee #92272]

Lonnie Hewitt was a pianist who performed with latin jazz vibraphonist Cal Tjader. He set up Wee records in Oakland which ran in the 60s and 70s which primarily released material from himself, Freddie Hughes, and The Ballads (of which Hughes was a member).

It released around 16 singles, many of which have been loved on the UK rare soul scene, such as Ernie Marbury 'Ain't Nobody's Business',  Ballads 'Can't See Your Love', Mary Stallings 'You Gotta Git', Freddie Hughes 'My Baby Came Back''Send My Baby Back', 'Where's My Baby'.

This single was released in 1969 and sounds very similar to another track 'Got To Keep My Bluff In' released by Freddie Hughes in 1968 on Wand and also recorded by Hewitt and released on Wee in 1977.

Rumple-Stilts-Skin [1981] - I Need You [Heat #HS 2008]

A group from Akron, Ohio, that evolved from The Chigago Gangsters in the 70s, who were known as The Harmonics before that in the 60s, and became Ivy afterwards in the 80s, with the key members being brothers Chris & Sam McCants who wrote the song.

It was initially released on a promo only on Heat in 1981 (from their self-titled album) and then as the B side to 'I Want To Dance'  in 1982.

Weldon Irvine [1976] - I Love You [RCA #JB-10558]

A highly sought after tune and a rare groove classic from Weldon Irvine. It was on his 'Sinbad' album and also has a version of Marvin Gaye's classic What's Going On' on the flip.  Irvine released around a dozen albums but very few singles, only around 3 or 4.

Tragically, he commited suicide in 2002 at the age of 59.

Pointer Sisters v Madeline - Don't It Drive You Crazy

This track is considered a rare groove classic. Originally it was released as an album only track by Pointer Sisters on their 1977 'Having A Party' album, but has been reissued at least twice in recent years in 2010 b/w NS classic 'Send Him Back' on ABC and in 2016 on a Japanese 7" released by Universal.

It was also released by Madeline in 1978 on her 'Who Is She...' album.
