An album only track from Roy Lee Johnson
& The Villagers released on their only, self-titled, album on Stax
in 1973. The group disbanded not long after the recording of the album
due to the death of bass player Michael James. They released just one
single, a funk tune 'The Dryer (Parts 1 & 2), both sides are on the
album.
The rest of the album is mainly funk, although
'Something Special'
is a good southern style soul ballad/stepper and
'Midnight At Rileys'
is a cool, mid-tempo, funky/latin, instrumental. The featured track is a
driving, funky, Northern Soul tune.

The album was reissued on CD in 2010 and vinyl in 2017.
Roy Lee Johnson had a solo career before and after the band between 1962-1978. A couple of other tracks of interest for NS devotees include 'Boogaloo #3' (Josie 1966), 'Guitar Man' (Philips 1967). Most of his other material was blues or raw deep soul.
