Reel People Feat. Angela Johnson [2021] - You Used To Hold Me So Tight (Dr Packer Remix) [Papa]

Originally recorded by Thelma Houston in 1984 and covered by Reel People & Angel Johnson in 2006. A batch of remixes have been released on 25 Feb 2021. Apart from the album version, I consider the remix by Dr Packer (Greg Packer from Australia) to be the best of the bunch as all the others are too 'clubbed up'.

Just glancing down the Traxsource Soul / Funk / Disco chart there are at least seven out of the top 10 which are all 'reworking's/remixes' of club hits:

Tiffany Bynoe [2021] - Make Me Say It Again [Alimiya]

Tiffany Bynoe was previously known as Tene Williams and released an album and a few singles in the 90s under that name. She later married Kyle Bynoe and took a sabbatical to raise a family and join a minstry.  

She has just released a new single on 5 Mar 2021 which is a cover of The Isley Brothers' 'Make Me Say It Again' from their 1975 album 'The Heat Is On'.

A downbeat version of Evelyn 'Champagne' King's 70s classic.  There are various other mixes of this KNOX Disco Mix (vocal & dub), KNOX Soulful House Mix (vocal & dub) and Yence 5050 Ibiza (vocal & dub) but these are aimed at clubbers.

Brave Williams [2020/21] - Don't Tell Me No [SoNo]

This tune was actually released last Aug (2020) but seems to be getting a new 'push' with a new video just posted on YT on 8 Mar 2021.

A soul ballad in the same vein as Mary Cross' recent singles, so if you like those then you will probably appreciate this as well.

Christina 'Brave' Williams is from Baltimore and is an actress (IMDB) and was also a member of four girl group Rich Girl who were active between 2007-2011 but only released a few of singles.

Sykes [2021] - We and Us [Fluid Funk] (Full EP)

I posted 'We And Us' back in Jan 2021 and received a message from Fluid Funk notifying me of the release date of the full EP 19 Feb 2021 ... but 'slept' on it, so here it is in entirety.

The track I'm featuring is 'Ease'. As I said on original post, it's difficult music to 'pigeon-hole' but probably best described as lounge/chill out.  Smooth, laid back, mellow, jazzy, break/broken beat are terms that spring to mind.

Sykes (aka Mike Everling) is a singer/songwriter/producer from Rotterdam and Fluid Funk I believe is also based in Rotterdam (owned by Sykes).  You can read more on BandCamp. I had originally thought the vocals were female, but apparently Sykes is male and his vocals are described as 'ambiguous'!

Sevell [2021] - Connections [Sevell Soundz]

The title track from a new 6 track EP by Sevell released 10 Mar 2021.  The EP is predominantly R&B and this track I'd regard as soulful R&B. 

I can find no info on the artist and suspect that this is a self released debut?

Lola [2021] - From Me To You (Toronto) [Self Released] (Full Album)

From a new album called '3' released 6 Feb 2021 by an artist named Lola who I can find nothing about, but from her YT channel looks like she's released a few singles and an EP in the last year (one of them has the name Lola Diamonds so perhaps that's her surname).  

The album is mainly R&B, but the featured track and also 'The Recipe', 'Changed Behaviour' aren't bad!

DiaRGi Feat. Rogiérs [2021] - I'll Take Care Of You [Fibby]

Another great cover version (which challenges the original) from Spanish R&B singer DiaRGI and US singer Rogiérs. It was released 16 Feb 2021.

The song was written by Brook Benton and originally recorded by Bobby 'Blue' Bland in 1959, and has been covered by many since including Roy Hamilton, O.V. Wright, Margie Joseph, Ollie Nightingale, Irma Thomas, Etta James and Gil Scott-Heron. Even Mick Hucknall, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello have had a go at it!

The shared vocals on this are so smooth and soulful.

Roniece Levias [2021] - Do For Love / Black Cherry [Jack & Jill]

A superb new release on 23 Feb 2021 from Roniece Levias which is an excellent cover of Bobby Caldwell's 1978 top 10 hit 'What You Won't Do For Love'.  With all due respect to Mr. Caldwell, I think this version is even better!

Roniece Levias is a new name to me but a quick search on Discogs reveals that she did vocals for Tupac Shakur (amongst others) in the 90s.

Myles Sanko [2021] Memories Of Love [Légère] (Full Album)

The long awaited new album from Myles Sanko dropped today (12 Mar 2021) 'Memories Of Love''. Along with the four singles already released (posted here and here), the standout tracks on first listen are 'Where Do We Stand' and 'Whatever You Are'.

The whole album is good classic soul with a hint of jazz. This one (along with 'Streams Of Time' single) is firmly in the list of best of the year so far.
