A self-titled debut album by Sons Of The Sun which I
found last Friday on release but have hesitated to post as it's a bit
left field. I can't quite get my head around it. Is it jazz, funk, rock,
hip-hop, all of the above? It defies categorisation! Some of the tracks remind me of Prince, who I
was never a big fan of but appreciate that he was a musical genius but
I'm afraid it was lost on me apart from a handful of tracks.
Sons of the Sun are singer-songwriter JTronius from Texas and
London producer Maverick Quest, who have never actually physically met,
and feature a selection of guests and musicians.
The album is available digitally (£10), on CD (£16) and vinyl (£30) from
Bandcamp,
Beware of looking for previous material as on most of DSP's they are
converged with a South African group of the same name. Their only other
material was their debut single "Underwater Dreaming" (25 Sep) and "Sun Gods" EP (5 Nov), both included on the album but the singles have alternative
mixes.
