Lalah Hathaway, the daughter of legendary Donny Hathaway, is celebrating her 53rd
birthday today.
She broke onto the music scene in 1990 with a self-titled album whist she
was still studying at Berklee College of Music. To date she has released
six studio albums, a live album and was featured on a Joe Sample album
"The Song Lives On" in 1999. She is currently reported to be working on a
new album"L.A.L.A.H. Rebirth".
One of her early singles was with the remnants of Heaven 17 (who
previously were members of Human League) B.E.F. i.e. Ian Craig Marsh and
Martin Ware on a cover of Sly & The Family Stone's 1971 hit "Family
Affair" on which her vocals featured in 1991. It was her most successful
single reaching #37 on UK pop chart that year.
She doesn't tend to release many singles and took a five year hiatus in
1999 after recording an album of jazz covers with Joe Sample.
I've picked twenty of her best tunes (singles and album tracks) with a
bonus ... well it is nearly Christmas ... a cover of probably the best ever
soul Christmas record recorded by her father in 1970. I think this is a
Spotify single only, recorded live in 2017.
As an added bonus there's a live performance of the Leon Russell song made famous by her father, "A Song For You". Just check out the number of musicians on that stage! It's a very recent recording on 18 Sep 2021 in Rotterdam with Metropole Orchestra.
The playlist is in reverse
chronological order from her latest single with Robert Glasper to a couple of singles and tracks from her 1990 debut album.
