Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles [2021] - How Can You Throw My Love Away / When Joe Touches Me [Soul4Real #S4R17]

Hot on the heels of the success of the two singles released only a couple of weeks ago on their new Jai Alai imprint (Rance Allen Group and Ursula Ricks both now sold out but you may find one with a dealer), Soul4Real release another vinyl only single from Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles.

Both sides "How Can You Throw My Love Away" (also recorded by Carla Thomas on "Memphis Queen" 1969) and "When Joe Touches Me" were recorded in Chicago in 1969 (at the same session as their last Atlantic single "Trustin' Heart" written and produced by Curtis Mayfield).

They are previously unreleased on vinyl, but look like they have been lifted from the 2014 40 track compilation "The Complete Atlantic Sides Plus" released on CD by Real Gone Music and digitally released by Rhino in 2016.

As the CD title implies, it consists of all the songs they recorded during their tenure with Atlantic Records between 1965, starting with the underrated "All Or Nothing", through to 1970 with "Trustin' In You". Around a dozen singles were released by Atlantic but only two charted "I'm Still Waiting" (1966)  and "Take Me For A Little While" (1967) both reaching #36 R&B with the latter getting to #89 on Billboard Hot 100.

In the early years the group consisted of Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendrix, Sarah Dash and Cindy Birdsong who left in 1967 to replace Florence Ballard in The Supremes.

After Atlantic the remaining three moved to Warner Bros. (3 singles between 1971-72), RCA (2 singles in 1973) and then Epic where they had their biggest hit "Lady Marmalade" #1 R&B and Hot 100 in 1973 simply named LaBelle.
