Robert "Bigg Robb" Smith began his musical journey as a teenage DJ at a radio station in
Cincinnati, OH, in the late 70s. Into the 80s he focused on funk and
became acquainted with many of the artists. From meeting Reggie Calloway
of Midnight Star he was introduced to Bootsy Collins and his brother
Catfish and became a member of Mico Wave. Soon after he found himself
under the mentorship of Roger Troutman (Zapp), initially as a driver and
then became a member of the band. He adopted the moniker Big Robb after
the death of Troutman in 1999 (who was shot by his brother Larry who then
took his own life) and embarked on a solo career releasing his debut album
"Cheddar Cheddar" in 2000 (some sources state 1995?).
He has a new album due out next Friday (13 Aug 2021) titled "Fantastic". The lead single from the album "Good One" was released yesterday (6 Aug 2021). It's not available on Spotify as
yet so I've linked to a YT clip posted by DJ George Smith (aka DJ Semelo).
A slab of southern soul .. for those who feel it!
