The new album from The Baylor Project, who are married couple Jean &
Marcus Baylor, was released on Juneteenth (18 Jun 2021), I've been waiting
for it to arrive on Spotify but it doesn't look like it's going to feature
as their last album is not there either.
They have just published a video "The Making Of Generations (Official
Album Premiere)" on Friday (2 Jul 2021).
They debuted in 2017 with "The Journey" which topped the Billboard Jazz
charts and was nominated for two Grammys. They received a third Grammy
nomination for last year's single "Sit On Down".
"Generations" is their highly anticipated sophomore album which is a
blend of soul, jazz and gospel. It contains nine original compositions and
two covers. One is Michael Wycoff's "Love Makes Me Sing" taken from his
1980 debut album "Come To My World", who sadly is no longer with us
dying from pancreatic cancer in 2019. The other cover is a vocal version of Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes" released in 1966 on "Speak No Evil" whilst he was a member
of Miles Davis' 'Second Great Quintet" (Davis (trumpet), Shorter (sax),
Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Tony Williams (drums). Shorter
also founded Weather Report in 1971.
The most soulful tracks are the aforementioned "Love Makes Me Sing", "Happy
To Be With You" and "Walk On By" (which is not the Bacharach & David
song).
Jean Baylor is from New Jersey and was one half of 90s duo
Zhané, then under her maiden name Norris, with Renée Neufville.
Marcus Baylor is from St. Louis and was a member of
The Yellowjackets.
