New music released on Friday (2 Jul 2021) from the Fatback Band, now
known as Fatback Band New Generation with the original founding member
Bill 'Fatback' Curtis. Lead vocal duties are performed by blue-eyed
artist Isabella Dunn Gordon.
Never in a million years would I have guessed that this was the Fatback Band, if listening blind! After a prolonged intro (50 seconds of only a 2:52 track) it kicks in to a pleasant modern soul style dancer.
The group was founded in 1970 by Bill Curtis (drums) out of Gerry Thomas
(of Gerry & Paul) and Johnny King (bass) & The Fatbacks and Johnny
Flippin (guitar). Keyboardist Gerry Thomas was also a member of The Jimmy
Castor Bunch in the early days.
Fatback Band, known simply as Fatback in the 80s, were famed for their
early 70s street funk and went on to have crossover hits by the mid 70s
such as "Yum Yum" "Do The Bus Stop", "(Do The) Spanish Hustle", "Party
Time" and "Night Fever" in the 70s and the UK soul weekender anthem "I
Found Loving" in the 80s which was their biggest UK hit on the second
attempt in 1987 (originally released in 1984).
The current, and a few recent releases, has been released by Ace.
They did a great little modern soul / soulful house tune back in 2007
called
"Feel The Fire" (YT clip below).
