A new album from D Mills released 1 Jul 2021. I skimmed through its
thirteen tracks briefly yesterday and nothing really jumped out except the
Stan Taylor track "Talk To Me" got my attention as I know of him from a
duets EP with Raquel Rodriguez last year. When I started hearing rap and
obvious blue-eyed 'yacht rock' vocals on several tracks I put the album to
one side and moved on.
I've re-listened to it and there are one or two good tracks. One features
Amber Navran "Leave The Light On" and also the track following it with
Chantae Cann ("Be Mine (Sunshine)") which has some cool jazz
licks.
I normally like tracks involving Astyn Turr as she's got a great voice,
but not this one as it's mainly a rap track. It starts off 'dramatically'
as if it's going to be some sort of opus and Astyn's voice is heard only
to be cut out immediately by a rapper (MillsWasChosen) for a full minute
until her voice is heard again for all of 35 second before we get the rap
again for another 30 seconds then I gave up on it as it's a rap tune with
Astyn's vocals rather than the other way around!
D (Danny) Mills is an L.A. producer who is the great great grandson of the
jazz/blues legend
Bessie Smith who died in 1937. He doesn't appear to release singles but has
released around five albums since 2007.
Don't judge the album like I did from the first four tracks as the second
half of the album is much better.
