How good is this latest release on Russell Paine's Super Disco Edits
(based in Hatfield, Herts) which has two great sides? I posted the modern
soul stepper "Midnight Star"
at the beginning of April as at that time the test pressings were being
launched.
The flip side "Take A Chance" is a sublime, soulful ballad and my
preferred side so I've led with that one, as it is, as far as I'm
concerned, as near to 'soul perfection' as it gets. It's just over 4 mins
long but you're still left wanting more! How on earth does a song of this
quality fail to get released back in the day? Thankfully it has surfaced
just over 40 years later and still sounds great as 'real' soul music is
timeless. Makes you wonder what some of today's music will sound like in
40 years time ... but let's not go there!
"Midnight Star” is an unreleased recording that was produced in the late
70s by Cecil DuValle, (a member of Teddy Pendergrass band who also
played keyboards on The O'Jays album "So In Love" in 1978 and Patti
LaBelle's "Patti" album in 1985) at Alpha International Studios in South
Philadelphia. The original studio masters were lost when Cecil moved to
England because Teddy Pendergrass stopped performing.
"Take a Chance" is a duet by Doug Payne and Carman from the same
recording sessions recorded at the time he was touring with Sister
Sledge on their We Are Family tour.
Carman Bryant is from York, PA and was married to Jason Bryant who was a
co-founder of The S.O.S. Band.
Doug is married to former member of The Three Degrees, June Payne. He
had two songs selected by Gamble & Huff to be recorded by Phyllis
Hyman before her tragic and untimely death in 1995. He founded
Phase 5 Records
in Philadelphia in 1981 which has been resurrected since 2017.
The 45 is due for release on 7" vinyl on 30 Jul 2021. Click on label
