Johnny 'Dr. J' James [2021/2002] - One In A Million [Self Released]

This track was on this week's Starpoint breakers chart, which I thought was odd as it was released in 2002, unless it is a reissue or coincidentally another Johnny James released a song with the same title.  In any case it made me investigate and this is a very good version of the Sam Dees song recorded by Larry Graham of Graham Central Station in 1980 who had a #1 R&B and #9 Hot 100 hit with it.

I have now discovered from his facebook page that he has re-released both his albums, 'The Remedy' from 2002 and 'The Cure' from 2009, so that will explain why it's in the breakers chart.

I'm not sure if Johnny James is the singer as 'The Remedy' sleeve shows him holding a clarinet and on 'The Cure' sleeve, a saxophone, but no other credit is given for the singer, so perhaps it's multi-tracked.

James was born in Tallahassee, FL, but eventually moved to Rochester, NY. He states that one of his biggest influences was Cannonball Adderley who lived in the same neighbourhood in  Tallahassee who inspired him to become an A&M graduate.  He was a member of 80s Florida pop/dance group Will To Power until 1989.

I've also checked out the rest of the album and there are a couple of other good tracks on it e.g. 'Slippin', 'Round & Round', both written by himself and Vincent Sims which I've included below.

Most of 'The Remedy' album is smooth jazz, with a few instrumentals, but if you want to listen here's the link.

'The Cure' album is mainly straight jazz with a few covers e.g. 'Living For The City, 'How Deep Is Your Love' and 'Where Is The Love', but I found another James/Sims written track 'Your Love' which is pretty good, so have also included that.
