Eugene Record [1977] - Overdose Of Joy / Mother Of Love [Warner Bros. WBS 8386]

The second solo release by ex-Chi-Lite Eugene Record was this Modern Soul classic floorfiller. It was also featured on his debut solo album The Eugene Record (as was the flip) with a slightly longer version 4:16 v 3:56 on 45.  I've chosen to post the album version as you can't get enough joy!

What may be a liitle known anecdote is that he received his first (and only) Grammy for Beyonce's - Crazy In Love (a #1 hit both US & UK) as it sampled Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So) released on Brunswick in 1970, which he wrote and was given co-writer credits on Crazy In Love.  The original song reached #72 Billboard Hot 100 and #8 US R&B in 1970 before The Chi-Lites broke through with Have You Seen Her and Oh Girl! in 1971/72.

Eugene Record died in 2005 after a long battle with lung cancer aged 64.  His son Brian Anthony Record Sr. published a biographical book 'My Father In Lites' on the 10th anniversary of his death in 2015.

Eugene Record [1977] - Mother Of Love [Warner Bros. WBS 8386]

A failry 'average' ballad on the flip IMHO!

The Star-Tels / The Chymes and Lamarr label - Discography

In this post I'll kill two birds with one stone i.e. full Lamarr discography and a Star-Tels/Chymes dicography as there was only one other release on Lamarr apart from The Star-Tels.

Down To Earth and Lamarr labels were mentioned yesterday in the General Crook post as he had a few 45s released on Down To Earth owned by Walter & Burgess Gardner who also owned Lamarr.  Lamarr only released 3 45s, two by The Star-Tels/Star-Tells and one by The Esquires.  The Gardner's also owned More Soul but 4 of the 5 the releases were by The Soul Crusaders (the house band) and are instrumentals and the other by Ben Branch  & The Downhomers is also an instrumental so won't bother posting these.

The Star-tels were brothers Victor, David and James Martin.  They recorded two 45s on Lamarr and then renamed themselves The Chymes/Chimes and recorded two 45s on Down To Earth in 1970, then one on Ed O'Kelly's Teako and finally one on Margie in 1977 (which I'm guessing is their own label as states distributed by Chymes Enterprises on the label and it's the only release).

45Cat lists a 1964 release on Musictone for The Chymes but this is almost definately not the same group as they were a doo-wop group from Brooklyn and Discogs lists a 1966 release on Okeh as them ('Bring Your Love Back To Me' - the same song as Linda Lyndell on Volt) which again I don't think is the same group as both sides written by Cliff & Eddie Thomas who between them wrote several popular NS songs e.g. The Poppies -  There's A Pain In My Heart, Major Lance - Investigate, Barbara Lynn - Take Your Love And Run, Jay D. Martin - By Yourself, Tommy Ridgley - My Love Is Getting Stronger, Johnny Copeland / Johnny & Lilly - Sufferin' City).

The Star-Tels [1970] - Exterminator Man [Lamarr 1000]

Funky Soul

The Star-Tels [1970] - What More Can I Ask For [Lamarr 1000]

Soul group harmony / Crossover

Superb harmonies. Although the B side, it has Bunky's Pick suggesting that this was the 'play' side, and quite rightly so as the A side does nothing for me.

The Star-Tells [1970] - Falling In Love With You Girl [Lamarr L1002]

Soul group harmony / Crossover

The Star-Tells [1970] - You're Wrong About Me [Lamarr L1002]

Sweet soul group harmony

The Esquires [1971] - Girls In The City [Lamaar L 1001]

A sweet soul harmony / crossover tune In a similar vein to 'Falling In Love With You Girl' from The Esquires who gave us 'Get On Up' who started out with the line-up of Gilbert, Alvis and Betty Moorer (Speed Up written by her brother Gilbert and Bill 'Bunky' Sheppard, also recorded by The Imapals (her husband's band who also backed her on her version) in 1969 on Capitol before they also had a release on Down To Earth). Betty later left and the group went through several changes.  The only surviving member is Mill Edwards.

This was one of their last releases, only releasing 4 more 45s between 1974-1980 one of which being a re-recording of Get on Up '76.

The Esquires [1971] - Ain't Gonna Give It Up [Lamaar L 1001]

Sweet soul / crossover

I haven't listened to this side for quite a while as it has always been the other side that has been popular, but think with it's funky edge could well do with some new spins as these sounds are currently very in vogue.

The Chymes [1970] - My Baby's Gone Away [Down To Earth 71]

Great soul group harmony / Crossover

The Chymes [1970] - Where I Came From [Down To Earth 71]

This is not an expensive nor a rare record yet I can't find a label scan nor a sound file for it.  If anyone can help with either or both then please leave a comment.

The Chimes [1970] - The Beginning Of My Life [Down To Earth 72]

Perfect crossover tune.

The Chimes [1970] - Coming Changes [Down To Earth 72]

This is the instrumental version of Beginning Of My Life and as such is actually The Soul Crusaders who were Down To Earth / Lamarr house band.

The Chymes [197?] - Dancing Shoes [Teako 784]

Deep Funk
No release date available but would guess 1971/72?

The Chymes [197?] - I've Lost [Teako 784]

Funk bordering on garage and if it weren't for the writing credits I would doubt that it's the same band!

The Chymes [1977] - Wanting You Back [Margie MRC-001]

Modern Soul

The Chymes [1977] - Wrong Crowd [Margie MRC-001]

Modern Soul

David Martin & The Rare Essence [1974] - You're Mighty Right [Jay Pee J.P. 3]

Modern Soul

David Martin was a member of Star-Tels/Chymes and released a solo 45 in 1974 on Jay Pee which was reissued on Rekord in 1975.  I'm not sure if there is any difference between release but have posted both so you can decide for yourself.

This track sounds similar to The Eight Minutes - Looking For A Brand New Game written by Patrick Adams & Fay Hauser who had 'You Bring Me Sun In The Morning' played on release in 1975 which I recall Dave Godin recommending at the time in Blues & Soul magazine. After further investigation it should be no great surprise as Jim Porter was a writer of this track and writer/producer on several Eight Minutes tracks.

David Martin & The Rare Essence [1975] - You're Mighty Right [Rekord 702B]

The Jay Pee Studio Band Feat. Regi Boyd Jr. [1974] - You're Mighty Right [Jay Pee J.P. 3]

The flipside has a version which features Regi Boyd Jr. which is the instrumental version. On Jay Pee it's Jay Pee Studio Band Feat Reg. Boyd Jr. on Rekord it is credited to Rare Essence Feat. Regi Boyd Jr. I can only find a clip to Rekord version so don't know if they are different.

Rare Essence Feat. Reg. Boyd Jr. [1974] - You're Mighty Right [Rekord 702A]

Jimmy Burns / Bobby James / The Mystics / The Brand New Faces - I Really Love You - Versions

A song alluded to in The Fantastic Epics post was 'I Really Love You' a Northern Soul Classic written by Robert Lee Newsome (Bobby Newsome), a member of The Vontastics, who recorded it as Bobby James on Karol in 1966. The best known version is by Jimmy Burns.  In this post I'll highlight several other verions.

Jimmy Burns [1965] - I Really Love You [Erica E-02]

Discogs and 45Cat both list this as 1965 and 45Cat lists Bobby James as 1969, however Bobby Newsome (James) wrote the track and Jimmy Burns says that the all he did was put down vocals on the existing backing track so we should assume that Bobby James version was probably first.

Jimmy Burns [1965] - I Love You Girl [Erica E-02]

Written by C.B. (Christopher Bertrand) Allen whose name crops up in many of the tracks posted here.

Bobby James [1966] - I Really Love You [Karol KAR-3727]

Produced by C.B. Allen.

Bobby James [1966] - I Really Love You (Inst) [Karol KAR-3727]

Instrumental version

The Mystics [1970] - I Really Love You [Teako T370]

The Mystics were mainly hispanic teenagers from Pilsen, Chicago when they formed in 1967 as a 6 piece band but later merged with another Chicago band with brass and woodwind to become a 12 piece.
In Autumn of 1969 Ed O'Kelly (a producer and owner of Teako) heard the group's rehearsals and offered them a recording contract. They recorded this 45 in late 1969 at Universal Studios and  it was released in summer 1970. It did quite well locally but the group disbanded in 1971 leaving just this single 45.

The Mystics [1970] - That's The Kind Of Love [Teako T370]

The Brand New Faces [196x] - Brand New Faces [LuJuna 10655-7-B]

Credited to Sam Lee who presumably must have written the different lyrics as it has the same backing as Bobby James and Jimmy Burns.

The Brand New Faces [196x] - I Don't Wanna Cry [LuJuna 10655-7-A]

This version' is credited to Otis Brown, who I owned the label (named after his daughter) and all other releases are by him.  Brown is famous for recordeding Southside Chicago on Ole another label he was co-owner of.

Denise Chandler [1969] - I Don't Wanna Cry [Toddlin' Town 118]

There's a few links here ... this version's writer's credits are by Christoher B Allen who also wrote Jimmy Burns 'I Love You Girl'  (flip to I Really Love You) and 'I'm Not Like The Others' recorded by The Lovelites (when Denise Chandler (Deniece Williams) was a member) and also by Little Jimmy Gandy who I believe was related to The Lovelites.  The Lovelites also recorded a different version (below)

The Lovelites [1970] - I Don't Wanna Cry [Uni 73081]

The Lovelites version from their With Love From The Lovelites album.  The song was written by Chrsiopher Allen with the same title but as it is either a different arrangement or may be a different song as sounds different.

Commentary

US - after yesterday's low (25,854) since 31 Mar new cases increase by 2,279 and new cases have been above 25,000 and deaths above 1,000 for the 19th consecutive day.  New York now exceeds 250,000 cases (more than any other country) and New Jersey 88,806 (exceeding China, and has almost as many cases the 7th worst affected country Turkey) The active cases curve show no indication of flattening (652,874 yesterday v 677,856 today), yet US has seen demonstrations 'demanding' that lockdown end - which planet are these people living on, or do they just not look at the figures, which would be inexcusable for what they are protesting about.  Even worse, they are not even social-distancing in their protests - I wonder how many will now contract the virus during the protests and spread it to others? COVIDIOTS!

ES - now exceeds 200,000 cases but had the lowest new cases (1,536) since 14 Mar 1,159.

IT - new cases (2,256) lowest since 10 Mar (977) and active cases curve has been showing signs of flattening and reduced for the first day 108,257 to 108,237.

FR - new cases increased 1,388 and deaths 143, Deaths now exceed 20,000 (20,256).

DE - new cases (1,323) lowest since 15 Mar (1,204)

UK - new cases (4,676) reduce by 1,174 (but on only 3 days since 31 Mar have new cases been below 4,000), deaths (449) are lowest since 6 Apr (439)

Last week I highlighted that the UK recovery rate was not being reported/updated.  The number of recoveries has stood at 344 for weeks.  I do not understand why the number of recovered cases is not being maintained when every other country is maintaining it daily. I highlighted this fact to Piers Morgan at  ITV's Good Morning Britian and Laura Keunsberg at BBC who have both chosen to ignore it.  Morgan is more intent on 'beating up' the government about lack of PPE and the number of non hospital deaths.  Surely the number of people recovering from COVID-19 is as important to know as how many are dying? In Germany you have a 95% rate of survival whilst Spain 80%, Italy 67%, France 65%, US 63% and UK ???.

Rather than the media 'banging on' about lack of PPE, perhaps they could explain to us why, surgical gowns in particular, cannot be washed, sterilised and reused and must be disposed of.  When this crisis is over we will still have climate change to deal with and it seems crazy to me that we are making and shipping all this equipment simply to be disposed of after single use. I fully accept that face masks and gloves need to be disposed of but what is the scientific reason that  visors and gowns cannot be washed and/or sterilised?  This would alleviate the shortage.  I'm not saying that they should be, I'd just like to know some facts and evidence on the matter rather than the media using it as a tool to make political points at every opportunity as this is just stirring up fear.  I'd also like to know that if I catch COVID-19 what is my chance of survival is it 63% as in US or 95% as in Germany?  If I need medical help do I not receive it because there are no disposable surgical gowns available or do I take a chance with medics wearing reusable washed ones?  Who are the gowns protecting the medics or the patient or both?  Please let's have some facts and evidence reported not sensationalism.

A quick google search revealed that reusable gowns do exist and this report was from 1998 - so in 22 years surely they have progressed further?

If the media is so hung up on this then what about bed linen and all the other equipment being used by COVID-19 patients - are these all disposed of afterwards?  Surely bed linen, that COVID-19 patients have been lying in, being resued is far more of a risk? Then what about the mattresses? ... and on it goes.

Finally, I'd also like to know why 28 days after lockdown we are still seeing on average over 5,000 new cases daily in UK in the last week.  If WHO's incubation period of 2-14 days is correct, then that must mean that these new infections must have occurred at least 14 days into lockdown and therefore community spreading is still occurring, but where? Are these all health workers, essential workers, care home workers/residents?  It would be useful to know so preventative measures could be put in place.  I feel that this country is simply fire-fighting and not trying to get ahead on the pandemic.  There will be increasing pressure to remove lockdown and if we are not in a position at that time to test and contact trace we will simply see another major outbreak.  The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock set a 'goal' of 100,000 tests per day by end of April and here we are with just over a week to go and less than 20,000 tests were conducted on 19 Apr. It cannot be a coincidence that Germany, with far more cases than UK, has less than a quarter of the death rate than UK and that is because they tested and contact traced from the outset. Even the US, which has more than 6 times the number of cases, has a 60% lower death rate than UK.
