The Hamilton Movement ... The Best Of ...

When I first embarked on this post I had no idea it would lead me down several different paths.  The Hamilton Movement have connections with The Moovin', Groovin' Stone Funk Band whose members included Melvin Brown & James Matthews.  Also the Look-Out label owner Dick Melvin had connections with another label.  So the post is much longer than expected but makes sense keeping the connections together as I hope you'll agree there are some top quality tunes here.

The Hamilton Movement were from Indianapolis. I found an interview with them on WFYI Indianapolis from Nov 2019.

I read somewhere that the members were Melvin Brown, James Mathews, King Solomon, Wayne Ewing and Johnny Davis, but after listening to the interview with 3 members Bobby Banner, Richard Mitchell (guitar) and Tyrone Caldwell (drummer) it looks like the source may inaccurate or perhaps these were the members of The Movin', Soothin' & Stone Funk Band who they evolved from.  King Solomon Prather was mentioned in the interview as the lead singer on 'She's Gone'. Melvin Brown & James Matthews were definitely members of MS&SFB. No mention of Wayne Ewing or Johnny Davis.

The interview is a bit disjointed but, from what I can establish, the group originated from Hamilton Ohio (hence the name) and members came and went.
Tyrone Caldwell and Richard Mitchell were Indianapolis locals who played with many local bands before Hamilton Movement such as The Fabulous New Breeds (with Raphael Barnes who later joined Amnesty), The Monacos, Baby Lyon (of The Presidents), The Girlwatchers, Butternut Band and Prince & The Mysterious Knights (with Tony Milan).

Bobby Banner came from St Louis and moved to Indiana in 1969 having worked with Big Daddy Graham and then with Billy Ball & The Upsetters, I wonder if he was on Tighten Up / You Got Me Diggin' You on King?

They opened for B.B. King and toured with Rudy Ray Moore who made the cult classic 1975 comedy movie Dolemite in the mid 70s and with Z.Z. Hill as his backing band until around 1982 when 'Cheatin In The Next Room' broke and then Z.Z. Hill decided to change the band.  The group disbanded not long afterwards around the time that Z.Z. Hill died in April 1984.

Look-Out was an Indianapolis label owned by Dick Melvin who also co-wrote their killer cut 'She's Gone'.  All 5 releases listed are from Hamilton Movement except one by Funk Dogg which looks out of place but on closer inspection was produced by D. Melvin.

Discography

1975 - Send Me Some Love / Love Circuit [Look-Out 521-16]
1976 - We're Gonna Party / She's Gone [Look-Out LOR-007]
1976 - Your Love (Brings Out The Man In Me) / Having A Set (At The Disco) [Look-Out LOR-008

1977 - Love Man (That's What I Long To Be) / We're Gonna Party [Soundwaves SW-4547]

Their first 45 was credited as The Hamilton Movement & Stone Funk Band. Most of their 45s consisted of a funky/dance tune backed with a deep soul ballad.

The Hamilton Movement [1976] - She's Gone [Look-Out LOR-007]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 8.75

This track has a broad appeal northern, modern, crossover and even a bit funky.  If your feeling flush then, at time of writing, there is one (NM) for sale on Discogs for a mere £7,500.
The latest one listed on Popsike (8th Dec 2019) was only VG- and had WOL and sold for $5,156 / £4,015.

'She's Gone' was bootlegged in 2014 on an Austrian label Soul Mafia with Nat Hall - Why (I Want To Know) on the other side.  It has also been 'reissued' on Look-Out in 2020.  A comment on Discogs states 'Think this has been pressed using audio from a you-tube video. Sounds absolutely terrible and I assume it's a bootleg', so from that I would guess it is.

The Hamilton Movement [1975] - Send Me Some Love [Look-Out 521-16]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 7.7

Deep soul.

The Hamilton Movement [1977] - Your Love (Brings Out The Man In Me) [Look-Out LOR-008]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 8.3

Group soul harmony, co-written by Dick Melvin and released on his Mel label.

The Movin' Soothin' & Stone Funk Band [1973] - Cryin' For Love [Philmore Sound]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 9.2

Deep soul group harmony.

Joy Incorporated [1973] - Cryin' For Love [Philmore Sound]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 9.2

Also released as Joy Incorporated but it's exactly the same just different band name.

Melvin Brown & James Matthews [1976] - Love Stormy Weather [Philmore Sound 6071-21]
SoulStrutter's Rating: 8.85

70s Modern soul from 2 members of The Moovin', Groovin' Stone Funk Band.  This has now been reissued twice, first on Grapevine in 2002 and more recently in 2017 on Izipho Soul.

Melvin Davis & James Matthews [2017] - Cryin' For Your Love [Izipho Soul ZP-03]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 9.2

Yet another version of Crying' For Your Love.  This is a previously unreleased version by Melvin Brown & James Matthews recorded at the same session as 'Love Stormy Weather' but remained in the can until Patrick Bickerstaff of Izipho Soul unearthed it and released in in 2017

Cane & Able ... The Best Of ...

Cane & Able were a Canadian band consisting of:
Frank Abel, Frenchie Thompson (vocals), George 'Apache Slim' Alford (trumpet), Worthington 'Doc' Brown (bass), Arthur W. 'Blinky' Bostic (percussion), Billy 'Chilly Willy' Ellis (sax), Norris 'Ricky' Ridguard (trumpet, trombone, vocals), George Pee Wee' Carter (drums), Garland 'Eddie' Edwards (guitar).

They released 2 albums in 1972 'Relating A Message To You' recorded in Paris and 'Cane And Able' and about 5 45s.

The majority of 'Relating A Message To You' album is funk / psychedelic funk but there are a couple of killer soul tunes. 'Cane And Able' album is pure funk.

I've selected what I regard as their best tracks, 2 tracks from 'Relating A Message To You' and 2 sides from their 5 45s.

Cane & Able [1972] - Relating A Message To You [Epic EPC 65265]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 8.75

The title track of their 1972 album 'Relating My Message To You'. This has got Curtis Mayfield written all over it but was written by Frenchie Thompson.

Cane & Able [1972] - Sweet Burn [Epic EPC 65265]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 9.1

Superb group deep soul harmony cut from 'Relating A Message To You'.

Cane & Able [1972] - Tired Of Bad News [Epic (FR) EPC 8090]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 8.85

Deep 'n sweet soul harmony.

Cane & Abel [1970] - California Dreaming [GRT (CA) 1202-01]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 8.4

A sort of jazz/funk crossover version of the Mamas & Papas classic.

COVID-19 27th March 2020 UPDATE

Already reported today:

UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and Health Secretary, Matt Hancock have tested positive for COVID-19 and Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty is self-isolating with symptoms.

181 new deaths in UK
769 new deaths in Spain
969 new deaths in Italy

UK Testing
113,777 people tested
14,543 tested positive 12.8%  (up from 11,558 yesterday)
2,885 new cases so far today (almost exactly double of that 2 days ago 1,452)

Sadly this confirms what I predicted last week (and the government has now confirmed it) that cases are doubling every 3-4 days and we look very likely to hit the predicted 16,000 figure tomorrow.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE .... STAY AT HOME

P.S. Watched an interview with a US trade union official last night ... if we think we may have it hard in UK think about 3.3 million applying for dole in US who automatically lose their health care from their employers when they lose their job!  It's bad enough worrying that you may be hospitalised without the worry of how you will pay for it!

US
President Trump continues his 'bunker mentality', after already stopping flights from Europe, he seems to think that sending troops to guard the Canadian and Mexican border will keep out COVID-19.  The virus is already there so are these some sort of deflection tactics? The economy is 'tanking' and his 'strange' attitude to COVID-19 (thinking it will be all over by Easter among other things) will probably ensure that he is not re-elected.  So, a least something good may come out of this but how many will suffer in the interim?

El Anthony / The Passions

Eldridge Anthony was from Gary, Indian and released 2 solo  45s on La Cindy in 1969 and another 2 on Star-Vue 1970-71. Prior to this he was with The Passions who released 4 45s on Tower in 1968-69.

La Cindy was owned by Leo Austell and Hillery Johnson (who co-wrote World Column's NS classic 'So Is The Sun'). They also founded Brainstorm, Twin Stacks with Archie Russell. Austell also owned Sta-Set and  Renee and was Betty Everett's manager.

La Cindy only released a handful of 45s but what a catalogue for NS connoisseurs 2 by El Anthony,  NS classics by Ernest Mosley (Stubborn Heart),  Walter & The Admerations (Man Oh Man (What Can I Do)) and also Johnny Ross & The Soul Explosions (Love-I-tis/Chi'-Ca'-Go).

Discography

The Passions
The Passions were El Anthony,  Roosevelt Christmas, Doyle Cole and John Coleman.

1968 - Just Like A Rolling Sea / Without A Warning [Tower 423]
1968 - Without A Warning / I Can See My Way Through [Tower 443]
1968 - I Can See My Way Through / Just Another Reason [Tower 443]
1969 - Just Another Reason /Just Like A Rolling Sea [Tower 474]
1969 - High Jacked Pt I / High Jacked Pt. II [Tower 485]

El Anthony
1969 - Crying Without A Reason / Will You Wait [La Cindy 1001]
1969 - I Want To Be Together With You / We've Been In Love Too Long [La Cindy 1002]
1971 - Will You Wait / Sweet Jo-Ann [Star-Vue SR-1001]
1970 - That's What My Lady Says / Crying Without A Reason [Star-Vue SR-1002]

NOTES:
The Passions seemed to release the B side as the next A side!
Just Another Reason was a Curtis Mayfield song also recorded by The Fascinations on Mayfield in 1968.
Without A Warning was originally recorded by The Amazers on Thomas in 1967.  I have just discovered another slowed down version of 'Without A Warning' from 1969 under a different title Turn On Your Lovelight by Vivian Hill on Nashville's S.B.I. label.
High-Jacked was arranged by Donny Hathaway

SoulStrutter's Rating: 8.9

El Anthony [1969] - I Want To Be Together With You [La Cindy 1002]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 8.85

Emmitt Long [1969] - Call Me [Donoyia CR-101]

This is an obscure 45.  Nothing else listed for this artist. There are 3 other 45s listed for Donoyia which suggest that the label was something to do with WOKS radio station in Columbus, Georgia.  The cat. no. CR-101 on Discogs is not on label so guess must have been in dead wax.  The other 2 45s are dated 1968 and 1969 which would probably date this around the same time.  There is nothing on the label except artist, title and producer Charlie Richardson (which laughingly someone on Discogs has linked to the London 60s gangster of the same name!).

There are only 2 listed on Popsike, one from 2006 £500 and another from 2008 £760.

The only ways, apart from an original 45, to obtain it (as far as I now) is from Soul Function The Northern Soul Story CD + DVD released in 2003 or Keb Darge & Paul Weller Lost & Found compilation 2009.

SoulStrutter's Rating: 9.5

Sublime crossover tune.

Eddie & Ernie [2009] - You Make My Life A Sunny Day [Ever-Soul ES-102]

Both tracks unreleased track by Phoenix Express / Eddie & Ernie from 1972.  They first surfaced on a Kent compilation 'Lost Friend's' in 2002.  Kent also released 'Sunny Day' on their Deep Soul imprint on vinyl 45 as Eddie & Ernie in 2017 with 'A Man To Love A Woman' on the flip. However, this wasn't the first vinyl 45 release as Daptone's Ever-Soul imprint released an alternative release to catalogue no ES-102 Bullets Don't Have Eyes as ES-102 C in 2009 with a 'You Make Life A Sunny Day' as an alternate flip to 'In These Very Tender Moments'.

Eddie & Ernie [2009] - You Make My Life A Sunny Day [Ever-Soul ES-102]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 9.2

Sublime deep soul group harmony.

Before we get to the flip side of Eddie & Ernie, there are a couple of other versions of 'You Make My Life A Sunny Day'.

Jacqueline Jones [1972] - You Make My Life A Sunny Day [Loadstone 3949]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 9.2

Female version of Eddie & Ernie's song.  I wonder how this song made its way to San Francisco from Phoenix in 1972? The flip side 'It's  Beautiful World' was also written by the same composers i.e. Eddie Campbell & Ernie Johnson and Pete James which (oddly) only got a UK release in 1972 on Jay Boy by them billed as Ernie & Ed which was their only 'current' release as all others from them in UK are reissues.

Bobby Barnes [1980] - You Make My Life (A Sunny Day) [Poormans P-001]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 9.0

Modern (1980) take on Eddie & Ernie's deep soul side.  Bobby Barnes also recorded some sides for Phoenix's Raina label so there may have been a connection with Eddie & Ernie.

Eddie & Ernie [2009] - Bullets Don't Have Eyes [Ever-Soul ES-102]

SoulStrutter's Rating: 7.8

Unreleased crossover track from 1972.

COVID-19 27th March 2020

Where do I start today?  The biggest story is that the US cases now exceed China's. From having 13,779 cases one week ago they now have 85,435 ... that's a 600% increase.  It was always suspected that the number of US cases as much higher than reported due to the lack of testing, but now that they have started testing it is quite stark. What did president Trump have to say ...'It's a tribute to the amount of testing we're doing, we're doing a tremendous amount of testing .. and I'm sure you're not able to tell what China is testing or not testing'

The UK saw new cases exceed 2,000 for the first time, up from its highest day yesterday of 1,452 to 2,129 and the first day that the number of deaths exceed 100 (144).

On the 21st Mar I speculated that if the UK cases continued at the rate we were seeing (doubling every 3 days) then by 28th we would be seeing 16,000 cases which would confirm that UK is on exactly the same trajectory as Italy (i.e. on 12th/13th March).  We are at 11,658 with 2 days still to go!

Germany also saw its highest number of new cases, after being lower than the previous high of 6 days ago of 4,528 for the last 5 days, the number of new cases spiked to 6,625.

Italy now has more than double the number of deaths than China (8,215 v 3,292) and is approaching the same number of cases 80,589 v 81,340 (which I expect it will exceed today) and Spain has now exceeded China's death rate 4,365 v 3,292 with 71% of the number of cases ( 57,786 v 81,340).

France also had its highest number of new cases up from 3,838 3 days ago to 3,922  and its highest number of new deaths 364 v 240 2 days ago.

It all looks very gloomy, however, if we look at China's stats from 1st March (approx 5 weeks from when they first starting reporting) the number of cases was 80,026 and 26th Mar 81,340, that's only 1,314 new cases in almost 4 weeks (average 50 per day) and the overall recovery rate is 96%. Let's all hope that the figures we are seeing in the West (especially Italy and Spain) is approaching the peak.  I fear that the UK and US are trailing by at least 2 weeks and the worst is yet to come.

Latest stats from Worldometers.

NB I have now added US figures
