We've introduced a new feature that you may find useful. It's an Archive button on the main menu (beside Home).

Clicking on this will present a list of links to the last rolling 1,000 posts in reverse date order rather than using the Previous Posts hierarchical list on the right side bar to see what's been posted. You may find this quicker and easier to find posts that you are interested in.

Amanda Greatorex [2024] - Good Enough [Endless Summer Music]

We were drawn to the last single, "Perfect" (4 Jan), by New Jersey native Amanda Greatorex which was included in SoulStrutter Selections Jan 2024 mix. She has a follow up single, "Good Enough" (4 Feb). Both songs, we assume, will be on her sophomore album "Point Of View" due out later this year.

Whilst she may appear a newcomer as far as recorded music is concerned, she has spent over ten years performing professionally after receiving a degree in music from the prestigious University of North Texas College of Music.

Michelle David & The True-Tones [2024] - Brothers & Sisters [Record Kicks]

We posted this last week when it became available to stream only on Bandcamp but it is now available to buy on other digital platforms as of today. It's the new single from Michelle David & The True-tones and the title track from a forthcoming 12 track album "Brothers & Sisters" due on 5 Apr.

A stomping northern soul style number (with more than a hint of Curtis Mayfield's only UK Top 40 hit "Move On Up") and will also be available on limited edition (500 copies) 7" transparent vinyl with "That Is You" (from the forthcoming album) on the flipside.

The group last featured here with their 2022 album "Truth & Soul" since when they released a single, "Trust", from it in Sep '23 followed by live album in Oct '23. They have signed to a new label, Milan based Record Kicks, on which the new album will be released and is available now to pre-order via recordkicks.com and Bandcamp digitally, on CD and vinyl.

The new album will be their eighth album since 2015 which includes a Christmas album and their last live album album.

Paul Smith [2024] - I'll Run / Only Once In A Lifetime // Ain't That Something [Hit And Run #HR 1556]

The second Hit And Run vinyl reissue today comes from Chicago's Paul Smith. Very little seems to be known about Smith (and a Google search with such a name would prove futile). What is know is that he released two singles on Chicago label Jacklyn in 1966, the label's first release "I'll Run" /  "Ain't That Somethingwhich he followed with a pairing of  "Ain't That Something" and "Only Once In A Lifetime"  on the label's fourth release.

The label was owned by Johnny Haygood and named after one of his daughters. He was also the stepfather of one Darrow Fletcher and set up the label as a vehicle for 15 yr old Fletcher after being disillusioned by the royalties received from Fletcher's first four singles leased to NY's Groovy label.

Jacklyn ran for only two years between 1966-68 and released just ten singles.(whether or not Jacklyn 1007 was ever released is a mystery as it is not listed anywhere). Whilst Haygood set up the label primarily for his stepson, Fletcher only released three of the ten singles.

The label's first release by Smith is probably the most sought after and is an in-demander on the rare soul scene, sufficiently for it to be bootlegged. Only one original is for sale on Discogs so they are very hard to come by but now you don't have to settle for a bootleg (apparently quite a convincing counterfeit identified by the running time of 2:30 vs 2:20 on original) as you can now buy an official reissue.

For his only other known single he reused the first's flipside along with "Only Once In A Lifetime", so this reissue consists of all his known recordings. Smith is on writing credits for two of the three songs  We wonder what happened to him as all three songs are top quality, with "I'll Run" being a firm favourite for many years and "Ain't That Something" being very much in the Darrow Fletcher vein.

The Vanguards [2024] - The Ground That You’re Walking On / Before You Take Another Step Girl // Somebody Please (Long Version) [Hit And Run #HR 1557]

Garry J. Capes' Hit And Run records release their first pairing of 7" singles of 2024. The first consists of three tracks from Indianapolis sextet The Vanguards. All three tracks were released digitally by Now-Again on a 2019 compilation "LAMP Records - It Glowed Like The Sun: The Story Of Naptown's Motown 1969-1972")  from which two tracks "Good Times Bad Times" &/ "Man Without Knowledge" were also released on 7" by Soul Direction last year.

Hit And Run has selected three more tracks: "The Ground That You’re Walking On" & "Before You Take Another Step Girl" on the A side with "Somebody Please (long version)". They are all Lowrider style group harmony songs.

The Vanguards were a 60s/70s soul group from Indianapolis, IN, led by James Davis and consisting of Paul Irvin, Dickey Pierson, Von Wheeler, Elaine Livingston and Wilbur Winston. They were LAMP (Layden And Miller Productions) Records only top 100 Billboard R&B charting group who hit twice with their debut single, the lowrider classic, "Somebody Please" (#49) in 1969 followed by another lowrider "It's Too Late To Love" (#33) the following year. "Somebody Please" was initially released on L&M (a forerunner to LAMP) records in Jun 1969 which commands a much higher price tag than the second issue on Whiz (a subsidiary of Hollywood's Double Shot) in Aug 1969.

The song, written by Davis & Irvin, was covered in 1969 by Billy Keene, initially on Dottie and then on Ronn, and has been covered by several others including Barbara Lynn on her 1996 LP "Until Then I'll Suffer", K-Ci & JoJo on "My Brother's Keeper" (2013) and many more. The most recent version, that we can recall, was by Trish Toledo in 2017.

After graduating, Davis enlisted for 3 years duty in the military forces, joining the infantry. It was there he came up with the bands future name 'The Vanguards' from the Vanguard rocket ship programme and formed the group which were to become a big hit performing for the armed forces until his 3-year stint was up.

They released around six singles on Lamp in 1970-71 followed by a couple on Indiana label Shirley in 1975 with their last release billed as Vanguards & The Lady.
