Site Navigation Tips

We've updated tags/labels today (which was long overdue) so that the blog search options are now bang up-to-date. Therefore, we thought it timely to give a few tips about the best way of navigating the site to find what you're looking for.

The easiest way of finding material by artist is via the 'Search by ..' drop down list in the menu. You can start typing the first few letters as a shortcut. i.e. no need to scroll all the way.

If you can't find what you're looking for there, then the next option is the 'Search this blog' box on top left or in the right hand column.

To see what's been posted most recently there's the nested menu in the right hand column but perhaps easier to use is the Archive menu option which lists all posts in reverse chronological order by date/time.

The Menu

Row 1

Jeremy Turgeon [2023] - Turned It Around [Music In Motion Records]

A song that was released in Nov '23, "Turned It Around" by Jeremy Turgeon seems to have been overlooked and is now getting a well deserved pushed again. It's framework is built around the Al Johnson feat. Jean Carn,1980 modern soul classic "Back For More", being sampled from the intro. How did we all miss this as it's a prime candidate for dancefloors with it's steppers vibe?

The name Jeremy Turgeon (aka Brass Man Reptiles) may be familiar to vinyl record buyers as Izipho Soul released a 7" by him in 2020 which included the gospel/jazz song "Blessed" featuring Cleveland P. Jones taken from a 2017 album "What Matters Most". The B side was Jones on "Mistakes". Note that copies are still available via Bandcamp.

He was billed as The Jeremy Turgeon Quintet on that release and we featured his debut solo single "Just Feels Right" in Aug '22 which featured Nichelle J. Mungo & Gabe Childs.

Jeremy Turgeon is a trumpeter/vocalist born in Springfield, MA, now living in North Carolina. He leads the horn section for gospel/jazz artist Doobie Powell.

He also works closely with Sanpriest co-writing his three singles to date.

SlyG [2024] - Understanding Love [Self Released]

SlyG is Sylvester Gilbert who we can find no information for. His latest single "Understanding Love" crept up on our Spotify feed which was released on 28 Dec. So a few months old but  does/should that matter?

It appears to be only his fifth single, the others were released since 2021 and a couple of them are worth checking out ("Your Love" (Apr '22) and "How We Gonna Live" (Jun '23)). One titled "Prado" is completely different with a Caribbean vibe, from which we are guessing that he's possibly from the islands?

This particular single only seems to be available via iTunes and not Amazon.

CALIGUZ [2024] - Calipso [Self Released] (Full Album)

A debut album titled "Calipso"  released today by CALIGUZ.

All songs are written by Lica De Guzman who is a Filipino from Geneva, Switzerland, and was a contestant on The Voice France in 2016. We assume that she now goes by the name CALIGUZ.

The standout track is "GOOD" which has a familiar backing that we've come across a couple of times previously that we can't quite place. It was used on Deanna Li "Deserve Your Love" at which time we 'thought' it may have been Joyce Wrice "Chandler" but it's not. It features a  rap section feat. BĂ©atrix Kiddo.

Other tracks of interest include "All I Really Need", "Say Her Name", "Confession" and "Beat Of The Heart".

Natty Ola [2024] - Natty Ola [Lola Sound Records] (Full Album)

Birmingham (UK) singer / songwriter Natty Ola (Natalie Ola Ajibade) has an original vintage new age jazzy style which is a fusion of hiphop, jazz and neo soul. She has released her first autobiography album called "Stories". It includes all four singles to date since her first in Jun '22.

The last five tracks are live recordings. Our choices are "F*$k U UP", "12 Hour Shift", "Drinking". and "Meditate"

Sinead Campbell [2024] - Angel [Self Released]

A new single from Irish-Jamaican singer Sinead Campbell from Bradford. She previously performed as Premaura and released a number of singles between 2019 and 2022. There are a few music videos of her performing them on YouTube.

However, she calls this her debut single and leaves her old alias behind with a new sound, changing direction from indie pop to neo soul/R&B with her new single "Angel".

Maiken Kroken [2024] - Waiting For The Weekend [Fun Feather Records]

Maiken Kroken began her musical journey from the age of 5 having piano lessons in Norway to TV shows in the UK. Her London gigs and performances resulted in TV appearances on ITV and BBC with girl band Miss Fitz with Gemma Sampson and Marina Berry.

They auditioned on The X Factor in 2009 and sang a jazz swing version of Britney Spears' "Toxic" and got through to the next round.

Maiken moved back to settle down in her native Norway. She  became a frequent performer in the Oslo music scene and then decided to take a break from music to become a mother.

She is now back with a debut solo single "Waiting For The Weekend" from a forthcoming debut solo EP "Ocean" due in Autumn '24. The song was co-written with Norwegian keyboardist Ivan Blomqvist and jazz singer / songwriter Natalie Sandtorv.
