It was a jaw dropping moment when we found and played this for the
first time. Such a stunningly beautiful song which goes straight to the
top of our list for this week's SoulStrutter Selection of the
Week.
Mélat Kassa is Ethiopian-American from Austin, TX, who we
have not come across before, which is surprising as she's been recording
since around 2012 but hasn't released a lot of music in the last few
years. This is her second single of 2023 with only one in 2022 and one in
2021, the latter two are also included on this release.
Her latest single is "The Now (Sweet Love No.9)" which is packaged with two of her previous singles "The Lesson" (Jul '21 and also pretty good with the intro reminiscent of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful") and "The Wave" (Jun '22).
Mélat's parents fled the brutal Ethiopian communist regime in the 80s and
emigrated to Cedar Park in Austin. She released her first album in 2013 and
has released four to date, along with a 5 track EP in 2015 and around 20
singles.
She has been dubbed 'Austin's Soul Princess' and the mayor proclaimed 14 Dec 2017 as Mélat Day.
