The Park Avenue Experience [2023] - Time and Time Again [JINUROCK Entertainment] (Full Album)

The Park Avenue Experience is a jazz project led by Sicilian Fabio Puglisi, who you may remember is behind Soul Basement who released a five track EP "Do No Wrong" last August from which Newcastle based Six Nine Records released two tracks on vinyl ("Take Me Back" c/w "Tryin' Hard").

On their brand new album, "Time And Time Again" (which is their fourth since 2020), they take a deep dive into the everyday i.e. countless different experiences, various colours, emotions, ups and downs, and everything that contributes to our evolution and growth, usually making us better, time after time.

Fabio tells us, "the band has tried to enclose in these ten new songs the collective imagination of a world that lives day by day, with billions each on their own path".

The group comprises Fabio Puglisi (piano & keys), Tony Vinci (guitar), Darius Martin (bass) and Enrico Aprile (drums).

The album has been recorded live, with no overdubs, and for the first time features guitars resulting in one of their smoothest albums so far. With a running time of just under 45 minutes, pour yourself a long drink, dim the lights and just chill and let The Park Avenue Experience take you on a ride.

Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds [2023] - Welcome Home b/w Trackdown [Numero Group #NUM4408]

More digital reissues today from Numero Group. We have actually featured Harvey Scales and both these songs ("Welcome Home" / "Trackdown") previously as we did a "Harvey Scales - Best Of" in Apr 2020, although it appears that many of the YouTube videos we used at the time have now been removed, so will have to revisit.

"Welcome Home" was recorded by late great Walter Jackson on Okeh in 1965 (and again with a longer version in 1976 on "Feeling Good") credited to C. (Chip) Taylor (real name James Wesley Voight, son of actor Jon Voight, who, if you didn't already know is the father of Angelina Jolie), yet the Scales single credits it to Jackson. A few others have covered the song including Garnet Mimms, Frank Dell, P.P. Arnold (one time member of the Ikettes), Dusty Springfield and Taylor recorded it himself on "Hit Man" in 1996.

Scales stamps his own mark on the song which starts off as a deep soul ballad and then towards the end at 4:10 turns into a frantic funky dancer, so don't be lulled into thinking that as you've heard other versions that it will be more or less the same.

The flip, "Trackdown", is a thumping Northern Soul dancer written by Scales and Magic Touch label owner Lenny LaCour. The record was originally released on LaCour's Magic Touch in 1969 and now fetches high prices (c£300).

Scales' finest moment, commercially at least, was writing Johnnie Taylor's #1 hit "Disco Lady" in 1976. He was from Milwaukee and began working with the Moorer's who later formed The Esquires. He died in 2019 aged 78, although his given birthdate is 1940 on Discogs and 1942 on Wiki.

Shyla Gray [2023] - Waiting For You [Self Released]

You couldn't make it up, there must be something in the water there, as Shyla Gray is yet another new artist from Toronto. Her debut single "Waiting For You" is released today, written/produced by Nabil Sioty from Manchester, CT.

Shyla has a rich tone and, on the basis of her debut release, we should be hearing a lot more from this artist. The only other music available from her at present is a set of cover songs on her YouTube channel and a couple of original songs on her Soundcloud.

Roger Williams [2023-05-21] - The Soulsorts Sunday Soul Collection #18 [Starpoint Radio]

The latest from the connoisseur's DJ, Roger Soulsorts Williams, whose SoulSorts Sunday Soul Collection 2023 #18 was broadcast live on Sun 21st May 2023, on Starpoint Radio 22:00-00:00 GMT.

There was no live show last week (14 May) as Roger's services were in demand at the 6th anniversary of 'Ease Your Mind' in Banbury but a recorded show (of no talk, all music) was broadcast. This week's show is a little late being posted as gremlins got in the works and the show failed to record but has been salvaged.

Roger's show is broadcast every Sunday between 22:00-24:00 (GMT) on Starpoint Radio playing his selection of the best new soul and jazz releases.
