Lorraine Ellison [2023] - Haven't I Been Good To You / I'm Gonna Cry Till My Tears Run Dry [Soul4Real #S4R26]

Two songs by Lorraine Ellison have been chosen for release by Soul4Real as one of their next two 7" vinyl reissues. The single leads with "Haven't I Been Good To You", an unreleased recording from 1967 until it appeared on a 2006 compilation "Lorraine Ellison - Sister Love: The Warner Bros. Recordings". The flip is from her 1969 "Stay With Me" album and is a cover of Irma Thomas' 1965 Imperial single "I'm Gonna Cry Till My Tears Run Dry".

We can't mention the name Lorraine Ellison without mentioning her iconic deep soul ballad "Stay With Me" which initially was a #11 R&B hit getting to #64 on the Hot 100 in the US in 1966. The song has seen several reissues in the UK (around seven to my reckoning) and it finally charted in the UK in 1995 but only reached #82.

Ellison was born in Philadelphia in 1931 and began singing with gospel groups. Her first single being two self-written songs "Open Up Your Heart" / "This Is The Day" as Lorraine Ellison And The Ellison Singers in May 1963. She hit with her first solo single "I Dig You Baby" on Mercury (1965) which she co-wrote with Dennis Lambert and her manger/husband Sam Bell of The Enchanters (and would later be covered by Kiki Dee, Jerry Butler and The Ambassadors). A follow up single on Mercury didn't sell, and then came "Stay With Me" almost by chance as Frank Sinatra cancelled a studio session for which a 46 piece orchestra had been hired and at short notice Warner Bros. offered the session to Jerry Ragovoy at no cost who called in Ellison to record the song in July 1966. The song has been covered by multiple artists, first by The Walker Brothers in Feb 1967 and perhaps most notably by Lea Roberts (1970), Shirley Brown (1970) , Kiki Dee (1978), Ruby Turner (1993) and Natalie Cole (1999) and a male version by Rockie Robins in 1985.

Her music career was relatively short, running from 1963-1974, releasing around a dozen singles and three albums. She achieved only one further chart success with "Heart Be Still" in 1967 and left the music business to take care of her mother in the early/mid 70s. Ellison died of cancer in 1983 aged 51.

The single is available to pre-order for release on 27 Feb 2023.

Paul Kelly [2023] - You Make Me Tremble / Come With Me [Soul4Real #S4R25]

Paul Kelly is not a 'particularly' well known name to many but die-hard soulies, but his second single, "Chills And Fever" (Lloyd / Dial 1965), received plays 'up North' which is not the same song that Thomas the Jones released as his second single in 1964. On the same label the following year, Helene Smith recorded an answer song "Thrills And Chills" which also had spins 'up North'. It was Kelly's sophomore single following "It's My Baby" / "The Upset".

In a career spanning six decades from 1960-2011 he released eight albums and around thirty plus singles. He achieved nine R&B chart entries between 1970-76 with his biggest hit being "Stealing In The Name Of The Lord" (the title track from his debut album which has also had exposure on the Northern Soul scene) reaching #14 in 1970. Thelma Houston recorded the song on her self-titled album on MoWest but that song, and a couple of other tracks, did not feature on the US and Canadian issues, probably for fear of lashback from the bible bashers.

The two sides on the new Soul4Real single are, up until now, album only tracks taken from two albums "You Make Me Tremble" from "Hooked, Hogtied & Collared" (1974) and "Come With Me" from "Don't Burn Me" (1973) both released on Warner Bros and both appear on 7" vinyl for the first time.

Kelly was born in Miami in 1940 and formed a short-lived group with his brother in 1956 after which he formed The Spades who became The Valadeers who later joined Clarence 'Blowfly' Reid's group The Delmiras. His first solo recording was "I'll String Along with You" for Dade which remained unreleased as Kelly had a disagreement with Reid.

In 1994, and again in 1995, he suffered heart failure followed by a stroke. He survived but his vocal ability was impaired, however, he recorded two albums since, "Let's Celebrate Life" (1998) which included a remake of "Stealing in the Name of the Lord") and "1984" in 2011. Although not noted on his Wikipedia entry, according to John Lias' sleeve notes on the release, Kelly died in 2012.

The single is available to pre-order for release on 27 Feb 2023.

Kimberly Brewer Feat. Joe & Stevie Wonder [2023] - Don't Make Me Wait Too Long [Kimberlily Records]

An infrequent single release from Kimberly Brewer who has been a long-time backing singer with Stevie Wonder as well as Earth, Wind & Fire. She featured as a backing vocalist on Whitney Houston's hit single "We Didn't Know", (which was a duet with Stevie Wonder) and on Elton John's "Duets" album along with lending her vocals on albums by Teena Marie, Rick James, Will Downing, Boney James, Vanessa Williams and many others.

Today she has released a remake of a Stevie Wonder song recorded by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway in 1980, "Don't Make Me Wait Too Long", which features Joe and Stevie Wonder.

Kimberly has featured here once before on a debut single "Just That Sweet To Me" in 2020  (if you discount an earlier Christmas single). Her only other solo effort (listed) is a collaboration with with Maysa "No More Pain" in Jan '21.

Steve Aggasild [2023-02-12] - SoulAndJazzFlavas [SOTAR]

Steve Aggasild's debut show for State Of The Art Radio (SOTAR) broadcast on 12 Feb 2023 between 20:00-22:00 GMT.

Nearly all up-to-date new releases except one or two slipped in from 2022. Five on the bounce from the exceptional album by October London and two from Will Downing's excellent new album. Kevin Oxberry played all seven tracks from Will Downing's album on Friday and listening to Roger Soulsorts Williams last night he played at least four or five as well as good few from October London. If these shows are anything to go by then expect to see both albums enter high on the charts in the coming weeks. If not then something is very awry!

Steve now does a show Fri 21:00-23:00 (GMT) on Soul Music Radio and two shows a week on SOTAR Sun 20:00-22:00 (GMT) and Wed 20:00-22:00 (GMT). If you have yet to listen then please do take a listen as he is one of the best UK soul radio presenters around with a 40 year pedigree.
