R.I.P. - Burt Bacharach (12 May 1928 - 8 Feb 2023)

We've just heard the sad news that legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach died yesterday (8 Feb 2023) of natural causes at the age of 94.

He, along with his long-time partner Hal David, wrote so many classic pop songs, predominantly in the 60s, and helped launch the career of Dionne Warwick in particular. Whilst much of his music may be considered as MOR/easy listening, his contribution to, and influence on, modern popular music cannot be overstated.
Bacharach has won six Grammy Awards and three Oscars for his music and was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and was proclaimed music's "Greatest Living Composer" in 2008. He also received an honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music the following year, 2009. Not content with others recording his songs, he also recorded around 40 albums.

He was married four times, divorcing his first wife of five years, Paula Stewart, in 1958. His second marriage was to actor Angie Dickinson (1965-80) and then singer/songwriter Carole Bayer Sager (1982-1991), marrying Jean Hansen in 1993 until his death.

His first professionally written song was "Once In A Blue Moon" recorded by Nat King Cole in 1952. His first #1 hit was "The Story of My Life", first by  Mary Robbins who had a #1 on the US Country chart with it, and then covered by Liverpudlian Michael Holliday (Norman Milne) who had a UK #1 hit with it in Feb 1958. It was followed by "Magic Moments" sung by Perry Como  which was a UK #1 hit on 1 Apr 1958.

Although, of course many will be for the same song, Discogs lists almost 6,000 credits to his name. A very quick search on BMI revealed 917 titles registered to him.

Some of the classic songs include: "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself",  "Make It Easy on Yourself", "(They Long to Be) Close to You", "Reach Out for Me", "Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa", "Long After Tonight Is All Over", "Trains and Boats and Planes", "What the World Needs Now Is Love", "The Look of Love", "One Less Bell to Answer", "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head", "On My Own".

Hits for Dionne Warwick in particular, but also recorded by others include: "Don't Make Me Over", "Wishin' and Hopin'", "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "Walk On By", "A House Is Not A Home", "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)", "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me", "Alfie",  "I Say a Little Prayer", "Do You Know the Way to San Jose", "This Girl's in Love with You", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "That's What Friends Are For".

The list of artists who have recorded their songs is endless and includes Nat King Cole, The Drifters, Chuck Jackson, Gene McDaniels, The Shirelles, Gloria Lynne, Tommy Hunt, Jerry Butler, Jimmy Radcliffe. Timi Yuro, Dionne Warwick, Lou Johnson, B. J. Thomas, The 5th Dimension, Jackie DeShannon, as well as British pop artists, Tom Jones, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Rod Stewart  and so many more.

We have very quickly pulled together a playlist of alternate soul versions of many of the hits above. Many are duplicated as they are different arrangements of the same song. Also, enjoy this duet with Dusty Springfield on one of his best, "A House Is Not A Home".

God bless you Burt and thank you for your music which will be enjoyed "Long After Tonight Is All Over"!

Dylan Chambers [2023] - Don’t Give Up On My Love [Self Released]

Dylan Chambers is originally from Arlington, TX, relocating to L.A. around a decade ago. Everything about his new single screams 60s from the sleeve design which looks like a 60s EP, through to the very commercial, retro 60s sounding, song  "Don’t Give Up On My Love".

As a die hard, old school, soulie I just 'shouldn't' like it but it's undeniably catchy and radio friendly, just a bit too pop oriented for my personal taste but I'm sure there will be plenty who love it as it's a bit of an ear worm.

His recording career started in Aug 2020 with a debut single "I Can Do It Myself". He has an appreciation of late 60s/early 70s soul music and his third single in Dec 2020 was a cover if Jackie Wilson's "(You're Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher".

Los Yesterdays [2023] - Who Made You You? / Louie, Louie [Penrose #PRS 1015]

A few weeks ago we hinted at five new releases in the pipeline for Daptone imprint Penrose. One was posted by Vicky Tafoya, and another is out today. A third single on the label for Los Yesterdays, following "Nobody's Clown" and their last "Tell Me I'm Dreaming".

The A side "Who Made You You?" is an original song for which the label says "Imagine Eddie Holman cutting a side for Fania and you're getting warm".

The flip "Louie, Louie" was a minor hit for the song's writer, Richard Berry (& The Pharaohs) in 1957. The Kingsmen, a five piece rock n roll band from Portland, OR, had a #1 hit with it in 1964.

The group consists of Daptone boss Gabriel Roth (guitar), Tom Brenneck (bass), Gabriel Rowland (drums) and Victor Benavides (vocals).

The single is available digitally and on 7" vinyl from Bandcamp.

Remembering Tyrone Davis

Tyrone Davis (Tyrone D. Branch) was born on 4 May 1938, although some sources state 3 Oct 1937 (apparently from death records) but 4 May seems to be the general consensus. He died on this day (9 Feb) in 2005 aged 66/67. He had  a stroke in Sep 2004 and was in a coma from which he never recovered and died from pneumonia according to his manager of 36 years Leo Graham.
In a career spanning five decades he released over 30 albums and around 75 singles, 21 reaching R&B Top 20 with 14 of those Top 10, three being #1 hits ("Can I Change My Mind" (1968 #5 Hot 100), "Turn Back the Hands of Time" (1970 #3 Hot 100), and the last "Turning Point" (1975) which didn't cross over to the Hot 100).

Davis was born near Greenville, MS, raised in Saginaw, MI, moving to Chicago in 1959. He got a job as bluesman Freddie King's valet/chauffeur. At nights he began singing in clubs and was spotted by blues singer/pianist Harold Burrage. Burrage wrote and produced his first single ("Suffer" / "Try Me") which was released on 4 Brothers in 1965, as well as writing three of his next four sides for the label. Burrage died on heart failure at Davis' home in 1966. His early singles, three for 4 Brothers and one for Sack, were billed as a variation of Tyrone The Wonder Boy. His first using the name Tyrone Davis was for ABC in 1968, although the Sack single had Tyrone Davis (The Wonder Boy).

In 1968 he signed to Carl Davis' new Dakar label (Wiki states that he changed his name to Davis after Carl Davis which is stretching it given that he'd already released two singles on Sack and ABC with the name). He hit the ground running with his first single for the label "Can I Change My Mind" in June 1968 which was his first hit and went to #1 R&B and #5 Hot 100. It was an accidental hit as the intended official A side was "A Woman Needs To Be Loved" and it became a hit after a radio DJ flipped it over and started playing the B side and it spent three weeks on top of the chart.

The follow-up, "Is It Something You've Got", reached #5 R&B / #34 Hot 100, but it would be another five singles before he charted again with the biggest hit of his career "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" which was his second R&B #1 and peaked at #3 on the Hot 100. He achieved a total of twenty three R&B Top 40 hits whilst at Dakar between 1968-76, including another R&B #1 with "Turning Point" in 1975. Most were produced by Willie Henderson.
When Dakar folded in 1976 he joined Columbia, again hitting gold dust with his first release for the label "Give It Up (Turn It Loose)" which reached #2 R&B / #38 Hot 100. He achieved a dozen R&B entries with Columbia, "In The Mood" and "This I Swear" being the biggest hits both reaching #6 R&B but neither crossed over into the Hot 100. By 1982 he had moved to Highrise where he released just two singles "Are You Serious" doing the business peaking at #2 R&B and #57 Hot 100. After two more R&B hits for Ocean Front and four for Future in the 80s, he moved to Ichiban in the 90s releasing eight singles but had no further chart success. A final single was released for Malaco in 1997.

Whilst we've highlighted his biggest hits, we soul lovers aren't concerned with chart positions and his catalogue of music is outstanding and most of it available on Spotify. So trying to narrow it down to a digestible playlist was difficult. We initially had a playlist of almost 80 tracks so we've stripped out all the hits into a separate Hits Playlist to leave the non-hit singles, best B sides and album tracks below. He had 43 R&B hits and the playlist has 40 of them as "A Little Bit of Loving (Goes a Long Way)", "I Found Myself When I Lost You" and "Let Me Be Your Pacifier" are not available on Spotify, so we've linked to them on YouTube in Discography above (as well as to his early singles before he was with Dakar)..

Barbara Lewis - A Profile

Barbara Ann Lewis was born in Salem, MI, on 9 Feb 1943 so is 80 today. She began writing songs from the age of 9 and was recording as a teenager with Detroit's producer Ollie McLaughlin who at the time was a DJ at Ann Arbor radio station WHRV (now WAAM). He set up a number of labels in Detroit named after his wife (Ruth) and daughters (Karen (1962), Carla (1965), Moira (1968)). He also owned another label named after himself, Omack, on which there were only one or two releases (The Happy Cats and Joe Hunter).
Her first recording was "My Heart Went Do Dat Da" in April 1962 on McLaughlin's Karen label that got a national issue on Atlantic. It was a local hit but didn't chart. She followed it with "My Mama Told Me" in Aug 1962 again with little success (some sources state that these two sides were recorded at Motown's Studio A claiming that Andantes were the backing vocals and even suggests that Marvin Gaye may have been on drums, yet the Atlantic Discography 1962 states Chicago).

It was her third single, "Hello Stranger", that broke through and was an R&B #1 and Hot 100 #3 hit in May 1963, for which The Dells sang backup on. It had a Bossa Nova tempo in vogue at the time. On the back of it's success an album of the same name was released on which she wrote all the songs and included all six sides of her first three singles. Only one of her next three singles entered the R&B chart, "Puppy Love", which had non-album track, "Snap Your Fingers", on the flip which charted separately. One of the non-charting singles "Someday We're Gonna Love Again" has been played on the Northern Soul scene and was covered by Liverpool beat group The Searchers who had a UK Top 20 pop chart hit with it reaching #11 in Jul 1964.

The reason several singles charted on the Hot 100 without registering on the R&B chart is because Billboard suspended the R&B Chart between Nov 1963 until then end of Jan 1965

Her next big hit was the Van McCoy written "Baby, I'm Yours" (R&B #5 / Hot 100 #11 Jun 1965). Backing vocals were provided by Van McCoy's girlfriend Kendra Spotswood who Northern Soulies will know as Sandi Sheldon. She followed it with another Bert Berns produced song "Make Me Your Baby" (#9 R&B /#11 Hot 100 Oct 1965). The latter song had been recorded earlier for Cameo Parkway by The Pixies Three (a white girl trio from Hanover, PA) but wasn't released, and when Lewis had a hit with it they abandoned it and not long after disbanded. However, it did see the light of day on a 2001 compilation "The Pixies Three – Our History". Another Lewis album ensued. "Baby, I'm Yours", which had a photo of a young white couple on the sleeve to sell to a white audience, it reached #7 R&B. Another album was sandwiched in between that one and the first titled "Snap Your Fingers" (1964) which mainly consisted of covers along with her non-hit singles and none of her own written material.
Her next single, "Don't Forget About Me", failed to chart followed by her last R&B charting single "Make Me Belong To You" which did better on the Hot 100 (#28) than the R&B (#36). She released another six singles and two albums for Atlantic, "It's Magic" (1966) which was jazz and pop standards and "Working On A Groovy Thing" (1968), and then joined Stax subsidiary Enterprise in 1969 and recorded fifteen tracks with Mike Terry in Detroit.

At Stax she released one album "The Many Grooves of Barbara Lewis" in 1970 (which is a superb album throughout) and just three singles. The singles included three tracks not released on the album including a cover of Four Tops' "Ask The Lonely". No further chart action was achieved on the R&B singles chart.

She retired from the music business after her last single on Reprise in 1973 and will be best remembered for the song "Hello Stranger" which has been successfully covered by many, perhaps the best known by Yvonne Elliman who had a UK Top 30 hit (#26) with it in 1977, but there have also been versions by Martha & The Vandellas on "Heat Wave" 1963), Elkie Brooks (1964), also The Capitols (1966 on flip to "Cool Jerk"), The Supremes & Four Tops ("Dynamite" LP 1971), Carrie Lucas & The Whispers (1985 #20 R&B), and Queen Latifah (on "The Dana Owens Album" 2004) to name but a few. Lewis had to be tracked down after Elliman's hit with it as even her agent didn't know where to send the royalties.

Her next biggest hit, the Van McCoy penned "Baby, I'm Yours", has also had many cover versions. Possibly the best known this side of the pond by Linda Lewis who had a UK pop #33 hit with it in 1976. But such Brit pop luminaries as Cilla Black and Petula Clark also had a bash at it, as did the likes of Cher, Jack Jones, Harry Nillson, Cass Elliot (The Mamas & The Papas), B.B. King, Billy Preston and K.C. & The Sunshine Band.
Lewis came out of retirement in the 90s playing the nostalgia circuit such as the Carolina Beach music scene and in 1999 received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2017 she was forced into retirement with health issues.

Many compilations are available with perhaps the best being the latest in 2020 "Don't Forget About Me (The Atlantic & Reprise Recordings)" which does what it says on the tin. However, it obviously omits her Stax/Enterprise material, which was some of her best and doesn't seem to be available on any compilation, but the Enterprise album was reissue don CD in 1992/93.

Many of her songs have been played on the UK rare/Northern Soul scene over the years including "Someday We're Gonna Love Again", "I Remember the Feeling", "Love Makes The World Go Round", "I'll Make Him Love Me". "Thankful for What I Got", "Baby That's A No No", "How Can I Tell You", "Just The Way You Are Today", "You Made Me A Woman" "Ask The Lonely" and "The Stars".
