The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2023... Part 01 (Jan 2023 Wk 01-04) Spotify Playlist

Jan 2023

The first Dirty Dozen on 2023 as the end and the start of the year is always a lean time for new releases. So far this year we haven't been selecting weekly ones as there simply hasn't been enough outstanding new music to make up a dozen each week. Therefore, here's our selection of what we consider the best twelve releases for Jan 2023.

Wk 01 - Crutchfield Jones - The Crutchfield Jones Project EP [6 Jan]
Wk 02 - Ledisi - I Need To Know [11 Jan]
Wk 03 - Gene Moore Feat. India.Arie - Beautiful [20 Jan]
Wk 04 - Kyle Jason - The Right Place LP [6 Jan]

Wk 02 was a close run thing between Ledisi and Billy Valentine but Ledisi prevailed simply because Valentine's single is a cover version.

Playlist:

Ledisi - I Need To Know [11 Jan]
Kevin Ross - Look My Way [27 Jan]
Gene Moore Feat. India.Arie - Beautiful [20 Jan]
Massnada Feat. Enrica Capilli - Remind (Glamour LP) [10 Jan /24 Jan]

Kevin Oxberry [2023-02-03] - The Friday Night Rotation [Starpoint Radio]

We're having a bit of a reshuffle of radio show podcasts as there have been several changes over recent weeks. DJ Kool Keith's Sunday Soulful Vibes show has been moved to a new time slot from Sundays to Tuesdays and Steve Aggasild has moved from Soul Groove Radio and will now be presenting three shows per week, two on SOTAR (State Of The Art Radio) on Wednesdays and Sundays and one for brand new station Soul Music Radio on Friday night.

A new entrant into our radio show podcasts is Kevin Oxberry whose The Friday Night Rotation show goes out every Friday on Starpoint Radio between 7pm -9pm GMT.

As long as presenters submit their playlists in time the weekly schedule will be:
Mon: Roger Williams - Soulsorts Sunday Soul Collection
Tue: Steve Aggasild - SoulAndJazzFlavas (SOTAR)
Wed: DJ Kool Keith - Soulful Vibes
Thu: Steve Aggasild - SoulAndJazzFlavas (SOTAR)
Fri/Sat: Steve Aggasild - Soul Struttin'
Sat/Sun: Kevin Oxberry - The Friday Night Rotation
Sun: DJ Kool Keith - Soulful Slow Jams

Kevin Oxberry

Kevin was introduced to soul music from the mid to late 60's thanks to playing his late cousin's Motown records. He has been a collector of soul, gospel, jazz and soulful RnB for over 45 years getting a start in DJing in 1978 helping out on one or two roadshows.
He was/is an avid follower of soul radio, listening and learning from the likes of Robbie Vincent, Greg Edwards, Jeff Young, Norman Jay, Colin Curtis, Pete Tong, Bob Jones, Steve Walsh, Gary Dennis, Terry Jones, Paul Collins, Paul Thrower, Paul Goldsmith and Roger Williams.

Oxo got his break into radio in 2009 with Starpoint Radio, initially assisting Bob Smith on Digging The Crates. This led to presenting his own weekly show, 'The Friday Night Rotation', on the station and he is also now one of the presenters on monthly rotation of the 'Wind Down Zone' on Wednesday evenings. He's DJ'd at various events including VyBE, Hustle, Luxury Soul Weekender and North Lancs Soul Festival.

The Friday Night Rotation is broacast each Friday between 19:00-21:00 GMT on Starpoint Radio. The format of Kev's two hour shows is that the in the first hour and last half hour he plays upfront new releases and sandwiched in between for the first half hour of the second hour he digs out some oldies.

Larry Braggs - A Profile

A new tweaked and remastered mix of a Larry Braggs album track from 2005, "For Crying Out Loud", is due for imminent release, just posted. It's taken from his debut solo album "Places". Both versions have been posted for 'spot the difference' purposes.

Larry Braggs was one of nine siblings born in Chicago to parents from Mississippi . He was the first in his family to attend college graduating with a major in Music from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Braggs was always into funk music and cited George Clinton, The Bar-Kays and The Gap Band's Charlie Wilson as his inspiration. He became the lead and backing vocalist with Tower of Power between 2000-2013. He then replaced Bruce Williamson in The Temptations in 2015 (Williamson had earlier replaced G.C. Cameron) and was a member of the group until Oct 2019.  Whilst recovering from gall bladder surgery, Williamson contracted Covid-19 and died on 6 Sep 2020 barely three weeks before his 50th birthday. The Temptations performed as a quartet until his replacement Mario Corbino was found in 2020 who was then replaced by Tony Grant in 2021.

Braggs had a side hustle as he released two solo albums "Places" in 2005 (which includes a cover of one of my favourite ToP songs, originally sung Lenny Williams "Willing To Learn" (written by ToP founders Emilio Castillo and Stephen Kupka) which he takes even deeper and also  "For Cryin' Out Loud") followed by "Jus' Sangin'" in 2011. He also provided vocals for The Winans, George Duke, David Sanborn, Bob James, and Marcus Miller.

As an added bonus, if you're not familiar with his work, below are a couple of videos of his last performance with Tower of Power including a duet with former lead singer Rick Stevens on "I'm Still A Young Man" along with a selection of some his best solo recordings and songs on lead with Tower Of Power.

NOTE the track list for the "Places" album is mixed up and "Halftime" is actually "Help" which is one of the killer cuts.

Ann Sexton - A Profile

Ann Sexton was born Mary Ann Sexton in Greenville, SC, on 5 Feb 1950 and is 73 today. She is the cousin of Chuck Jackson.

Sexton released around thirteen solo singles and two albums between 1971-76. She is held in esteem in Northern Soul circles for the B side of her debut single on Impel "You've Been Gone too Long" but also by lovers of southern soul for her other material. Virtually all her her recordings were for Nashville based label Seventy Seven or associated labels. Despite the consistent quality of her music, only two of her singles charted , "You're Gonna Miss Me" (R&B #47 1973) and  "I'm His Wife (You’re Just A Friend)" (R&B #79 1977).
As with most southern soul singers, she sang gospel in her church choir. Moving to secular music she started winning local talent shows before singing back-up on a recording by Elijah (Hawthorne) & The Ebonies. The record was "I Confess" billed as Elijah & The Ebonies featuring Mary Sexton, the only release on Greenville label Gitana in 1968. She later married the group's saxophonist, Melvin Burton (who had played saxophone in Moses Dillard's band) and they formed their own group, Ann Sexton & The Masters of Soul, in the late 1960s. She was seen performing with the group at the Washington Center in Shelby, NC, by songwriter David Lee, the owner of the small local Impel record label, who recorded and released her first solo single, "You're Letting Me Down" / "You've Been Gone Too Long", in 1971. Lee released around fourteen singles and two albums between his Impel, Washington Sound and SCOP labels which he ran from his record shop Washington Sound in Shelby.

The writer's credits for "You've Been Gone Too Long" are to David M. Lee and Ann and Melvin Benton which was an alias for Burton, so the pair were married by this time. Unless it was a spelling error on the label, I suspect using the names may have been to disguise her real identify to the gospel fraternity. Only 500 copies were pressed making it pretty hard to find on the original label now.

The record was picked up by John Richbourg's Seventy Seven Records. Richbourg was a DJ for Nashville radio station WLAC known as John R. as well as being a producer and manager. He became head of A&R for Fred Foster's Sound Stage Seven in 1965 and he also produced most of it's output under the name JR Enterprises. Seventy Seven released the Impel single twice, first on a yellow label and then on the standard multi-coloured orange and black label. The latter being pressed to satisfy demand on the UK Northern soul scene for the flip which was played at the Blackpool Mecca from release.

It would be her fifth single, "You're Gonna Miss Me", for the label in 1973 that would chart, reaching #47 R&B. The same year she released her debut album "Loving You, Loving Me". The albums twelve tracks were the A and B sides of all her singles up to that point.

Their relationship with Lee and John R. degenerated when she and the band failed to turned up for a show to promote her chart single and John R. then lost interest in her feeling that she was being badly managed by her husband Burton.
Her second album "The Beginning" arrived in 1977 but only one song from the album saw a release as a single, "I'm His Wife (You’re Just A Friend)", which was her only other R&B chart entry at #79. The non-album flip side, "You Got To Use What You Got", was another of her songs picked up on by the Northern Soul scene. Interestingly, I note one of the backing singers on the album was Gwen Owens from Detroit who had a few of her 60s singles played on the Northern Soul scene. It transpires that she was signed on contract by Terry Woodford and Clayton Ivey who worked on the album. It is said that she had another single, "Just In Time To Be Too Late", set for release on Prelude after the album, but it was never released.

After the release of her second album, Ann moved to New York and left the music business to become a school teacher working with special needs students. She retired in 2010. However, she was cajoled out of retirement from music in Mar 2007 by Dan Dombrowe to perform at the Baltic Soul Weekender where she also appeared the following year in Apr 2008 and has made other occasional appearances at other event since. In 2010 she featured on Ferry Ultra's "Rising Up" and in 2015 she visited the UK at a soul connoisseurs event at the Wilton Ballroom, Castleford, run by the late Dave Box and his wife Val.

Barrett Strong - A Profile

We posted a tribute only last week to Motown writer Barrett Strong who died on 29 Jan 2023. He was born on 5 Feb 1941 and would have been 82 today.

He had the first hit for Motown with "Money (That's What I Want)" in 1959 whilst still a student at Central High School in Detroit aged 19. The song was written by Berry Gordy and Motown receptionist Janie Bradford, but Strong claims he was also one of the writers and later had his copyright included. It was first issued as his second single on Tamla (Motown's first label) in Aug 1959 and later on Anna for national distribution in Dec 1959 and reached #2 R&B hit #23 Hot 100 becoming Motown's first hit in June 1960.

It has been covered hundreds of times and several Liverpool beat groups had a go at it, first The Searchers and later of course The Beatles as well as several other British groups including The Rolling Stones. A new wave version was recorded by The Flying Lizards in 1979 and was an unexpected hit reaching #5 on the UK pop chart.
Strong was born in West Point, Mississippi on 5 Feb 1941 moving to Detroit at the age of 4. He was one of Motown's first signings and his debut single was Tamla's third release which he followed with "Money", both in 1959. He left Motown in 1962 and cut two singles, one for Atco and another Chicago's Vee-Jay subsidiary Tollie.

However, he achieved no more hits as a recording artists in the 60s and had to wait until 1973 for his next "Stand Up And Cheer Your Preacher" (#78 R&B) and "Is It True" (#41 R&B) in 1975.

He re-joined Motown in 1966 and became a lyrics writer teaming up with Norman Whitfield. His name is on writing credits for many songs held dear to the UK Northern Soul scene in particular by such acts as The Artistics, Mary Wells, The Dells, Marvin Smith, Gene Chandler, Dee Dee Sharp, Jimmy James, Edwin Starr, Jimmy Ruffin, Gladys Knight & The Pips and Isley Brothers, as well as many established  Motown artists, The Temptations in particular.
His biggest hits include "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "War", "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)", "Smiling Faces Sometimes" and songs by the Temptations: "Cloud Nine", "I Can't Get Next to You", "Psychedelic Shack", "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)", "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" for which he received a Grammy in 1973 to join Motown's first Grammy for "Cloud Nine" in 1969.

Strong left Motown when the company relocated to L.A. signing with Epic where he released just one a single before moving on to Capitol where he rekindled his recording career releasing two albums "Stronghold" (1975) and "Live & Love" (1976). Another album arrived in 1980 "Love Is You" and his last, "Stronghold 2" in 2001 on his own label Blarritt which saw a digital release in 2008 as "Stronghold II".

All three of his Capitol singles in 1975-76, "Is It True" (not available on Spotify), "Surrender" and "Man Up In The Sky", have been long time favourites on the UK modern soul scene. The latter being covered by Johnny Bristol in 1989 on Ian Levine's Motorcity label. Expansion reissued "Man Up In The Sky" along with "Is It True" on vinyl in 2020.

Strong was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.
