Ciara Leah [2023] - Love Money 12 inch [Ay Cee Triple Jay Records]

On 2 Jan '23 Ciara Leah released a five track EP "Love Money" from which the title track was the standout. It has now been released as a single yesterday (30 Jan '23) titled "Love Money 12 inch", yet it is exactly the same length (4:38) as the EP and sounds exactly the same to these ears, but it does also come with an instrumental version.

The EP was recorded live and was funded by FACTOR (the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings), which is a public/private partnership that supports recordings by Canadian musicians and music companies make recordings available to a wider public.

Ciara Leah (Ciara O'Reilly) (pronounced 'KEY Are Aliyah') is a musician, singer-songwriter and producer from Toronto. Apart from the current single and EP (from which another single "27" was released in Nov '22), she only has one other recording listed on the main DSPs from 2020, a single "Vibe", although another single, a 'trippy' futuristic instrumental "Eye Need Space" (Apr '21), is available on Bandcamp if you're that way inclined.

She has a few videos on her YouTube channel, one of interest is a cover of The Jones Girls "Nights Over Egypt" with KC Roberts on guitar filmed at the B-Side Lounge in Toronto. There is also another of Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" shot on Ward's Island, Toronto.

The Trammps [2023] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity] (Full Album)

The latest edition of Paul Simpson's Philadelphia Re-Edit sessions consists of 17 tracks from The Trammps.  All tracks come from just two albums "The Legendary Zing Album" (1975) and "Disco Champs" (1977) although several of the tracks on the 1977 "Disco Champs" album were originally released on "Trammps" in 1975.

The Trammps started out as The Volcanos in 1964 on Jimmy Bishop's Arctic label and several of their early Arctic singles have had exposure on Northern Soul dancefloors e.g. "(It's Against) The Laws Of Love"and "Storm Warning" in particular. The Vocanos line-up was  Eugene Jones (Gene Faith) (vocals), Steve Kelly (vocals), Stanley Wade (guitar), Harold 'Doc' Wade (bass), John Hart (keys) and Earl Young (drums). They released six singles on Arctic and then moved to Harthon for two singles. Jones left the group for a solo career renaming himself Gene Faith and recorded around seven singles for Virtue between 1969-75 with an unreleased song on Virtue in 1970.

Early Young had been in a group The Exceptions with Jimmy Ellis. He recruited the Wade brothers from The Volcanos along with Ellis and Robert Upchurch to form The Trammps. The line-up fluctuated and earlier members included Dennis Harris, Ron Baker and Ron Kersey amongst others. They signed to Buddah in 1971 releasing their first single "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart" in May 1972 which became their first R&B Top 20 hit (#17), "The Legendary Zing Album" followed in 1975.

After "Zing" they released several singles which were lowly entries into the R&B charts until "Hold Back The Night" (#10 1975).

They moved to Golden Fleece (part of PIR) and released their second, self-titled, album in 1975. The following year they were snapped up by Atlantic where they released their next six albums up to 1980 and had another two R&B Top 20 hits with "That's Where The Happy People Go" (#12 1976) before their smash hit "Disco Inferno" which featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

The Sextones [2023] - Here I Go Again [Record Kicks #RKDIGI113]

A new version of a long time modern soul favourite, "Here I Go Again", originally  recorded by Jean Plum (Bettye Jean Plummer) in 1976, was released by The Sextones on Friday (27 Jan 2023).

The song was co-written by Willie Mitchell, with Earl Randle and James Shaw and released on Hi in 1976. It was one of only three singles Plum released using that name although she released around five singles under her full name prior to that between 1967-73. None of her singles charted, but she is perhaps best known for "Look At The Boy" on Hi which also got a UK release on London.

You may recall Jimetta Rose' album last year ("The Gift - Around The Way Queen") which had a track titled "Still Here" that sampled the song.

The Sextones are quartet from Reno, Nevada formed as The Mark Sexton Band in 2007. They released two albums under that name ("Multifomity"  (2008) and "Listen Out" (2010)) and changed their name to The Sextones in 2015 releasing their first album using the name, "Moonlight Vision", in 2017.

The current line-up is Mark Sexton (guitar, vocals), his younger brother Chris (piano), Alexander Korostinsky (bass) and Daniel Weiss (drums) who have known each other since childhood.

This release is their debut for Record Kicks. Jean Plum's sultry vocal is swapped for Mark Sexton's airy falsetto.

Thanks to Bill Buckley (SoulAndJazzAndFunk) for bringing this one to our attention.

Marvin Junior (The Dells) - A Profile

Marvin Junior was the baritone lead vocalist of one of the longest serving groups in history, The Dells. He was born on this day in 1936 and died of heart and kidney problems on 29 May 2013 aged 77 so would have been 87 today. His voice is one of the greatest in soul music which has has inspired many such as Teddy Pendergrass.

He was born Marvin Curtis Junior on 31 Jan 1936 in Harrell, AK, moving to Chicago at a very young age.
The Dells were formed in 1952 as The El-Rays consisting of Junior, Verne Allison, Johnny Funches, Chuck Barksdale and brothers Michael and Lucius McGill. They met whilst at Thornton Township High School in Harvey, IL. Luscius McGill left soon afterwards leaving them a quintet and in 1955 renamed themselves as The Dells. They disbanded temporarily in 1958 after a near fatal car crash which left Michael (Mickey) McGill in hospital for six months, but reformed in 1960 with The Flamingos founding member Johnny Carter replacing Funches in 1961. As stated recently in the Remembering Billy Stewart feature, Barksdale joined Harvey Fuqua's Moonglows (along with a young Marvin Gaye) during this period, returning to The Dells when they reformed in 1960. The same line-up stayed together until Carter's death in 2009 but continued performing right up until 2012 when Junior and Barkdsdale retired owing to ill health. Barksdale died in May 2019.

Allison, McGill and Barksdale were the harmony backbone of the group with Junior and Carter taking lead.

Their first single was released as The El Rays on Checker in 1954 after which the changed their name to The Dells and signed with Vee-Jay in 1955 and hit with their third single for the label, "Oh What A Nite", (written by Junior and Funches) which reached #4 R&B in 1956. Despite around another fifteen singles on Vee-Jay they failed to capitalise on that hit and had to wait until the sublime deep soul ballad, "Stay In My Corner", in 1965, which had a cover of Tom Jones' hit, "It's Not Unusual", on the flip, for their next hit (#23 R&B). It was another two years before their next in 1967, after which they had a run of consecutive hits, including two R&B #1 with re-recordings of both "Stay In My Corner" and "Oh, What A Night" and another eight R&B Top 10 hits.
They re-joined the Chess fold in 1966 on the Cadet imprint and this was their golden age up to 1975 registering twenty six R&B hits in this period which was steered by producer/arranger Charles Stepney. They achieved sixteen R&B Top 20 hits, ten of those Top 10 with two number one hits. Eight of the singles crossed over to the Hot 100 Top 40. Stepney died of a heart attack in 1976 and the group switched to Mercury in 1975 and the big hits became fewer and farther between.

In 1978 the joined ABC, then 20th Century Fox in 1980 and Private I in 1984. An album appeared on their own label Veteran in 1988 followed by one on Philadelphia International in 1992.

The Dells were the inspiration, and consultants, for the Robert Townsend 1991 movie "The Five Heartbeats" which was about a fictitious singing group loosely based on The Dells. They recorded "A Heart Is a House for Love" for the soundtrack which was a #13 R&B hit for them in 1991.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

I thoroughly enjoyed putting the playlist below together even though many of their albums are not available as it forced the exploration of some that may otherwise have been skipped. There are just so many gems, especially many of the ballads and deep cuts, as well as many well know songs. I did consider streamlining it but left it as is as there may well be some new to you.
