David Ruffin - A Profile

David Ruffin was born Davis Eli Ruffin on 18 Jan 1941 in Whynot, MS, and died on 1 Jun 1991 from an accidental overdose of crack cocaine aged 50. He would have been 82 today.

He is of course famous for being one of The Temptations between 1964-68, arguably their most successful years known as the 'The Classic Five' along with Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. He replaced original member Elbridge "Al" Bryant in 1964. Ruffin sang lead on their first #1 hit "My Girl" (which is now their signature song), as well as another five #1 R&B hits and many other top 5 singles. In fact all, but one, of their #1 hits featured Ruffin on lead whilst he was with the group.
With is father being a strict Baptist minister, it's no big surprise that he began singing gospel in the family group who opened shows for gospel artists such as Mahaliah Jackson and The Blind Boys Of Mississippi. He left home aged 14 and moved to Memphis, TN, with minister Eddie Bush as his guardian, with the intention of following the ministry. He performed from the age of 15 using the name Little David Bush and later joined The Dixie Nightingales and also became a member of The Soul Stirrers after Johnnie Taylor left the group, who had replaced Sam Cooke in the group in 1957.

At 16 Ruffin moved with Bush and his wife to Detroit where his brother Jimmy was working for Ford Motor Company whilst trying to pursue a career in music. In Detroit he released a single "You and I" / "Believe Me" in 1959 under the name Little David Bush on Vega. His next record was released on Anna in 1961, where he was working alongside Marvin Gaye packing records as well as being the drummer for The Voice Masters, using the name David Ruffin "I'm in Love" / "One of These Days". Prior to that he recorded four singles with The Voice Masters between 1959-60 on Anna. Anna was a label set up in the late 50s by, and named after, Berry Gordy's sister Anna. He released another two singles for Chess subsidiary Checkmate "You Can Get What I Got" / "Action Speaks Louder Than Words" (Sep 1961) and "Mr. Bus Driver - Hurry!" / "Knock You Out (With Love)" (Apr 1962).

His brother Jimmy was signed to Motown's Miracle imprint in 1961 (which was later changed in 1962 to Gordy to avoid conflicting with the group The Miracles) and will be forever known for his 1966 smash hit "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted". Through his brother Jimmy, who went on a Motortown Revue with The Temptations, he found out that they were looking for a tenor to replace Elbridge "Al" Bryant. They both auditioned for the group but they chose David, partly because he could dance and Jimmy couldn't, and the rest is history.

During his tenure with the group they achieved sixteen R&B chart hits, all but two were top 10 with six reaching the top spot. He sang lead on the following hits: "My Girl" (#1 1965),  "It's Growing" (#3 1965), "Since I Lost My Baby" (#4 1965), "My Baby" (#4 1965), "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" (#1 1966), "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" (#1 1966), "(I Know) I'm Losing You" (#1 1966), "All I Need" (#2 1967), "(Loneliness Made Me Realize) It's You That I Need" (#3 1967), "I Wish It Would Rain" (#1 1967), and "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)" (#1 1968).

The success went to his head and he began demanding lead billing and that the group should be renamed David Ruffin & The Temptations in line with Diana Ross & The Supremes. He became addicted to cocaine and missed rehearsals and shows. When he missed a performance in Cleveland, OH, in June 1968 he was promptly dismissed from the group to be replaced by Dennis Edwards from another Motown group The Contours whose contract had expired in 1967. The Contours then disbanded but regrouped in the early 70s. Edwards had replaced Joe Stubbs in The Contours (the brother of Levi Stubbs (Four Tops)) who then joined 100 Proof (Aged In Soul) on Holland, Dozier, Holland's Hot Wax.

Ruffin tried to leave Motown in 1968, after being sacked from the group, but they wouldn't release him enforcing the contract, instead giving him a separate contract as a solo artist. He released seven solo albums for the label between 1969-77, one with his brother Jimmy with another unreleased album, recorded in 1970/71, posthumously released as "'David' Unreleased LP & More" by Hip-O-Select in 2004. Two further albums were released on Warner Bros in 1979/1980.

In 1982 Ruffin re-joined The Temptations, along with Eddie Kendrick who by this time had also left the group (and dropped the 's' from his name), for the "Reunion" album but Ruffin began to miss shows to promote the album and was inevitably fired once again.

He then collaborated with Eddie Kendrick featuring on a live album by Daryl Hall & John Oates in 1985 and a duet album with Kendrick in 1987.

The pair teamed up with Dennis Edwards and began touring and planned a European tour but Ruffin died in 1991 and Kendrick followed in 1992 with lung cancer.

I the early 90s Denis Edwards formed  a group named Dennis Edwards & The Temptations which led to a legal dispute with Otis Williams who won the rights to the Temptations name so  in 1999 Edwards renamed the group The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards (go figure?). He died in Feb 2018 but the group continues to perform and includes David Sea taking on David Ruffin's role.

Ruffin's solo career didn't really take off. He had seven R&B top 20 hits and another six entries, of which only one broke into the top 50 and many others which didn't chart. His biggest single was "Walk Away From Love" (#1 R&B 1975) followed by his first single "My Whole World Ended (The Moment you Left Me)" (#2 1969).

Georgie Fame [1979] - Sitting In The Park [Pye #N 119]

Continuing the Billy Stewart theme, I received an email from our good friend Bill Buckley of SoulAndJazzAndFunk in response to the Remembering Billy Stewart post yesterday.

He attached this version of "Sitting In The Park" by Georgie Fame, which I'd seen listed but, incorrectly, assumed it was simply a rerun of his 1966 cover. However, it is a later re-recording from his 1979 album "That's What Friends Are For" which is a completely different arrangement of the song and is a very nice version and thought it was well worth sharing. So you have Bill to thank if you were not previously aware of this version. It still sounds very fresh to these ears, proving that good quality music never goes out of fashion.

In contrast, also posted below, is his faithful original cover version from 1966.

Bill Albright [2022] - Sitting by the Phone [Self Released]

Prompted by the 'remembering' feature for Billy Stewart yesterday is a post made last June for Bill Albright who released "Sitting By The Phone", which is 'ever so slightly' influenced by Stewart's "Sitting In The Park".

I was just sending a YouTube link to it to a friend to listen to it and noticed that at the end of October he uploaded a video for the song which wasn't available when originally posted.

Angela Winbush - A Profile

Angela Lisa Winbush born 18 Jan 1955 in St. Louis, MO is 68 today. She was part of duo René & Angela with René Moore between 1979-86 before going solo.

She studied architecture at Howard University in Washington D.C. singing to supplement her income and sang with a group called Hot Tea whilst at university which included Tawatha Agee who became a member of Mtume and sang lead on Mtume's hit single "Juicy Fruit". Agee also providing backing vocals for many other artists including Stephanie Mills, Melba Moore, Luther, Teddy P, Al Jarreau and Michael Wycoff.
In 1977, whilst still at university, she met Richard Smallwood and become one of the original Richard Smallwood Singers. Angela recorded a demo which she hawked around various labels without interest but through a friend who knew New York DJ Gary Byrd (who had a hit with "The Crown" on Motown) she got a place in Stevie Wonder's backing group Wonderlove in L.A. Whilst in L.A., through a member of Wonderlove, she met René Moore (brother of Rufus' guitarist Bobby Watson) at a rehearsal session and later became duo René & Angela and went on to released four albums together between 1980-85 ("René & Angela" (1980), "Wall to Wall" (1982), "Rise" (1983) on Capitol and finally "Street Called Desire" (1985) on Mercury. The first three albums resulted in two top 20 R&B hit singles.

In 1982 they were asked to write for, a then aspiring, Janet Jackson's debut album which resulted in Jackson's first top 10 R&B hit "Young Love" in Sep 1982. They also wrote for other artists including Rufus & Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills, Odyssey and, believe it or not, Lamont Dozier. Mills had a #1 hit with one of their songs "I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love". Winbush wrote the song whist still at university and it was recorded by Alton McClain & Destiny as "Power Of Love" on their debut, self-titled, album in 1978 (Alton McClain appeared recently In the UK at Luxury Soul Weekender 6-8 Jan).

The duo's real breakthrough came from their last album, "Street Called Desire", which produced four R&B Top 5 singles, two #1 "Save Your Love For #1" and "Your Smile", #2 "You Don't Have To Cry" and #4 "I'll Be Good" (which was well received in the UK reaching #22 on the UK pop chart)). A further track "No How - No Way" reached #29 R&B.

However, owing to their success, there was 'trouble at mill' and the duo split up in 1986 over songwriting credits as Winbush wrote most of the material and felt pressured to put Moore's name on credits, they went to court over it.
Winbush met Ronald Isley who invited her to work on the Isley's next project which was to be the album "Smooth Sailin'". Isley then produced her debut solo album "Sharp" from which she had a #1 R&B hit with "Angel".

Between 1987 and 1996 she released three solo albums "Sharp" (1987), "The Real Thing" (1989) and "Angela Winbush" (1994)) and had eleven R&B singles chart entries, five of which were Top 10 which, including her hits as a member of René & Angela, gave her nine R&B Top 10 hits. She never emulated "Angel" but came close with "It's The Real Thing" in 1989 reaching #2 and despite "Angel" topping the R&B chart it didn't crossover to the Hot 100 pop chart.

As well as her own recording career, Winbush wrote, arranged and produced for other artists including on The Isley's next album "Spend The Night" and the following three "Tracks If My Life" (1989), "Mission To Please" (1996) and "Eternal" (2001), Lalah Hathaway who was just starting out, Sheena Easton, Detroit trio Body as well as more songs for Stephanie Mills.

She also did background vocals on many artists recordings both before and during her own recording career. Artists include Freda Payne (Stares And Whispers), Helen Reddy, David Oliver (on his wonderful Magic Mind album and Rain Fire), Blair (Nightlife), Lenny Williams (Spark Of Love), Donald Byrd (Thank You … For F.U.M.L. (Funking Up My Life)), Wayne Henderson, Lamont Dozier, Les McCann, Stevie Wonder, Ramsey Lewis, Narada Michael Walden, Rufus & Chaka Khan, Bobby Womack, as well as many of the artist already mentioned (i.e. Stephanie Mills, Lalah Hathaway, The Isleys), the list goes on.

She and Ronald Isley married in 1993 and divorced in 2002. In 2003 Winbush was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer for which she had successful treatment and is now in remission.

The first half of the playlist below selects her best solo tracks with the remainder being the best of Rene & Angela. She really excels on the deep soulful ballads.
