VA [2022] - Miami Funk : Funk Gems from Henry Stone Records [Wagram Music] (Full Album)

Wagram Music has issued a compilation of 25 funk tracks from the catalogue of Miami's Henry Stone. Stone was a leading light in the Miami sound of the 70s and founder of several labels such as Alston, Dade, Cat, Drive, Glades, Dash etc. under the banner of T.K. Records named after sound engineer Terry  Kane who built a recording studio in the attic of Stone's office.  His biggest successes came from the likes of George & Gwen McCrae, K.C. & The Sunshine Band and Betty Wright.

T.K. went bankrupt in 1980 and was acquired by Roulette Records. Stone died of natural causes in 2014 aged 93.

The compilation is mainly for the funk fans but does include a few northern/modern soul spins such as Milton Wright "Keep It Up", the  fabulous Willie 'Beaver' Hale (Little Beaver) "Groove On", Betty Wright "Gimme Back My Man", Snoopy Dean "Shake n' Bump" and an underground jazz/funk club classic Uncle Louie "Full Tilt Boogie" (which I remember from back in the day) who were a group created by Walter Murphy of "California Strut" / "A Fifth of Beethoven" fame. It also includes a big early pop crossover funk hit by Beginning of The End "Funky Nassau".

A new one on me that I quite like is The Funky Bunch "Miami Funk" which doesn't appear to have been released other than on this and another compilation in 2005.  A surprise inclusion is Wilson Pickett "Let Me Know" which is from his 1976 album "Chocolate Mountain" until you discover that Wicked Records was a joint venture between Stone and Pickett.

Another surprise is James Brown "Smokin' And Drinkin'" which is from a solitary T.K. album "Soul Syndrome" in 1980 along with Vicki Anderson's answer song to Jean Knight  with "I'm Too Tough For Mr. Big Stuff (Hot Pants)" which was released on Brownstone a joint venture between Brown and Stone. The label was used as a vehicle to release singles by individual members of James Brown's band when King Records decided they would release only James Brown material. Predominantly Bobby Byrd and Vicki Anderson releases which consisted on nine of the original twelve singles released between 1971-77 with another three which were shelved and released post the Brown/Stone deal.

It's good value at £7.99 (i.e. 32p per track) however, buying individual tracks are 99p each!

The Decisions [2022] - That Girl / Come Round Here [Soul Direction #SD-103]

The latest release on Alan Kitchener's Soul-Direction label by The Decisions "That Girl" / "Come Round Hereis set for release next month. It's from a group known to Northern Soul followers for their "I Can't Forget About You" and for several sides to sweet soul lovers / lowriders, even though they only released five singles it total.

The Decisions were a group of school friends from S.H. Archer High School, Atlanta, GA who graduated in 1965. The group consisted of Hildred Thomason (deceased), Fred White, Henry Little, Howard Simpson and Harvey Poole, although Poole left later to join the U.S. Military. They formed their own label 'York' in the late 60s, on which they released two singles in 1969 before joining Sussex in the early 70s where they released three more singles, two in 1971 and another in 1972.

After leaving Sussex three of the members, which included Fred White, formed Unity who released just one single on Apex (Newark) in 1973. It was the only release for both group and label.

Their Northern Soul favourite "I Can't Forget About You", written by group member Fred White, was issued as the B side of both 1971 Sussex singles and also gained a UK release on the second issue which has kept the price down.

The two tracks being released by Soul-Direction are another pair (the first two "We're In Love" / "I Love You" were released in Jul 2021 and posted along with a full Decisions discography) from an almost lost master tape of tracks recorded in 1968 and would have been a possible release for the bands own York label. The tapes were sent to an L.A. music executive in 1968 by the group but were never returned. Alan has somehow got his hands on them and made them available for the first time, released on limited edition vinyl 7" 45 only. The Nu'rons [2022] - The Philly Soul Sessions [Emandolynn Music Co. Inc]

The Nu'rons from Salem, NJ, have been performing together for over 40 years releasing a few singles in the early 70s including the rare northern soul tunes "All My Life" and "Disco Hustle".

This EP "The Philly Soul Sessions" is a collection of the first professional recorded music from them with Philadelphia producer/writer Manny Campbell of Emandolynn Music.

They are a family group consisting of two sets of brothers and cousins Daryl Howard and Raymond Gibson (Daryl’s mother registered him under his father’s surname of Howard and Raymond under her maiden name of Gibson) together with Otho and Charles Bateman. They started at a young age (10/11) with another Gibson brother, Rudolph, as The Gospel 5. Rudolph left the group owing to illness and Daryl and Charles performed with a group called The Devotions before forming The Nu'rons.

The group started doing shows in New Jersey and Philadelphia managed initially by Arctic's Jimmy Bishop (Duo Dynamic Productions) and later WDAS radio DJ Georgie Woods (who's wife Gilda owned Dion and Top & Bottom labels). Georgie introduced them to Manny Campbell, who they auditioned "I’m A Loner" for at his and partner Charles Bowen’s Emandolynn studio in Chester P.A.

The audition was successful and Manny and Charles took the group to the Sigma Sound Studios with Tom Bell and the TSOP musicians to record "All My Life" and "I’m A Loner" which was released on the Nu-Ron label in April 1970.

Their next single "Disco Hustle" / "Can’t Do Enough Girl" was recorded at the Sound Room Studio in Upper Darby PA in 1971 and released on Stage-Art as The Nu'rons & Co.

Both singles failed commercially except locally but years later "All My Life" was unearthed on the UK rare soul scene and with the change in styles, with more funky tunes getting aired, "Disco Hustle" also gained spins. Both sides were reissued by Soul Junction in Feb 2018.

The flip to "All My Life", "I'm A Loner", is a sweet soul song which I would imagine is (or would be) popular with the lowriders, with the funky/crossover flip to "Disco Hustle", "Can't Do Enough  Girl" well overdue some spins.

They travelled the country performing and opening for some big artists including Gladys Night & The Pips, Kool & The Gang, The Spinners, Patti Labelle, Blue Magic and they continue to perform to this day but as a trio as Raymond Gibson passed away in 2005.

All four sides of their two 70s singles are included in the compilation along with an unreleased demo "I Can See The Love". However, whilst the main DSP's seem to have only a five track EP, there is an extended Bonus Edition available on Bandcamp which includes instrumentals of "All Of My Life" and "I'm A Loner", a demo version of "I'm A Loner" along with another two unreleased demos. Also, I believe, that the version of "All My Life" on the Bonus Edition is a new mix by Tom Moulton.

Credits on the Emanuel Campbell/Charles Bowen produced/arranged EP/album include Philly heavyweights Thom Bell (keyboards), Earl Young (drums) MFSB/Don Renaldo & The Salsoul  Orchestra (strings). The new unreleased mix/master was done by legendary mixing engineer Tom Moulton and mastered by Peter Humphries of Masterworks.

If you're interested in hearing more from The Nu'rons they released an album of new material "For Always" in 2014.

VA [2022] - The Skippy White Story: Boston Soul 1961-1967 [Stony Pointe Records] (Full Album)

A little bit later than originally scheduled (28 Aug) a compilation of rare soul tracks from Boston, MA, "The Skippy White Story: Boston Soul 1961-1967was released on 28 Oct 2022.

Skippy White is the alias for Fred LeBlanc who was originally a radio presenter on WILD am1090 in the 60s. He opened a record shop in Boston in 1961 and also set up a label named WILD.

I think many of the tracks are previously unreleased recordings from 60s Boston based artists. The compilation has been curated by Eli Paperboy Reed from his personal collection of rare singes and acetates and tapes made by Skippy White.

A pre-released track by local group The Precisions "Treason" was posted back in July.

The opening track, "Skippy White Theme (Part 1)" is a storming Northern Soul tune which would have torn up the dancefloors back in the day but most of us are far too old to dance to something like this these days unless a defibrillator is close at hand! It's not all dance tunes thought it includes some group harmony and gospel and some bordering on doo-wop.

Another one that you'll have to click on cover image for the full track listing as the Spotify playlist is not showing the artists.

VA [2022] - Mountain Of Soul Episode 1 [Charly] (Full Album)

Charly Records has just released a ten track compilation of Northern Soul tunes, many well known (i.e. Jimmy Robins, Sandy Wynns, Gene Chandler, The Inspirations, The Georgia Prophets all being NS Top 500 tunes and a version of "Last Minute Miracle" by Ruby Winters recorded by The Shirelles (1967) and by Linda Jones (album only 1967) whilst others relatively obscure and perhaps unreleased.

The compilation title is taken from the opening track by Harrold Burrage which I believe is a previously unreleased song until unearthed on one of the M-Pac Secret Stash compilations. Curiously it sounds the same as the song recorded by Tommy Payton on Staff (Gary, IN) which got aired at Top Of The World Stafford in the 80s, yet the writer's credits are to Ben Brown on that recording and not Maurice Rodgers, but that sort of thing was a regular occurrence.

The other previously unreleased track (until appearing on a self-titled album last year which was posted along with their full Discography) is The Swiss Movement "Trying To Win Your Love" which seems  a little out of place being the only 70s track on the compilation, but what a tune!

The compilation is completed with two relative cheapies (in NS terms at least) by Les Watson And The Panthers "Occasionally I Cry" [1966 Pompeii] and The Kelly Brothers "Love Time" [1965 Sims] which was bootlegged in the mid 70s on the infamous O.O.T.P. (Out Of The Past) label so it must have been in-demand at one time but I don't recall ever hearing it played out but would guess it was a Twisted Wheel type of sound so before my time.

It transpires that these compilations are generated from a new Mixcloud podcast series hosted by renown Northern Soul entrepreneur Kev Roberts who is the author of the Northern Soul Top 500 book, so it's no big surprise that half the compilation is from that! Episode 2 is scheduled for 11 Nov 2022.

Doug Shorts [2022] - Ole School Love [Yawl's Music Productions] (Full EP)

It's been a long time coming for Fred Douglas Shorts who has 'flirted' with the music business since the 60s singing with The Visitors (originally The Mists from Kansas City), Shades Of Brown and then formed The Master Plan Inc. in the early 70s until they broke up in 1980.  They had a verbal contract with Brunswick around 1976 but at the time Brunswick was in a legal case over payola and none of their material was released.  Two singles were self-released on 'vanity' labels in 1980 and 1984. In 1986 he had a chance to audition with a band for Motown in LA but was let down by one of the members not turning up through fear of flying.  More recently his early material was discovered by Andrew Brearley and his wife Sheila Hernando who formed Cherries records and cut several new sides with him and an EP and a few 45s have been released on Daptone.  Jazzman has released an album of mainly previously unreleased material and a couple of other albums have been released on his own Yawls productions label.

An article and some material was posted on Doug Shorts in May 2020 after he released "Casual Encounter" EP on Daptone titled "The Return Od Doug Shorts on MasterPlan Inc.". Apart from a single, his first new material since then is "Ole School Love" released on 24 Oct 2022.

Melani [2022] - From My Soul [Self Released] (Full EP)

Melani Boykin appears to be a new artist having released two singles this year, "Pressure Baby" (Feb ) and "Roll and Rock" (Apr) which are both included on her debut EP/album "From My Soul" released 25 Oct.

As regular readers will know I'm not a great fan of some of the new southern soul as it all sounds the same and synthesised to me but there are some pretty decent tracks on this album. In fact all of them except I'm not keen on "Roll and Rock" but "Day Dreamin'", "Pity The Fool" and "Stay" would be my choice cuts and "Pressure Baby" is not too shabby (as they say).

Melani is originally from New Haven, CT now living in Independence, LA.

Tasha Angela is a relatively new artist from Toronto. To date she has released six singles and a five track EP "Hidden Gems" since 2019.

Her last single "Space & Time" was released in Aug 2022 just after her appearance at the Global:Soul showcase on Sunday 18th Sep at London's Jazz Cafe and Monday 19th Sep 2022 at The Blues Kitchen, Manchester. We are told that she was blown away by her trip to the UK and warm welcome she received on stage, so much so she hopes to return soon!

She has a follow up single "Away" set for release this Friday (4 Nov 2022).

DJ Kool Keith [2022-10-23] - Soulful Vibes [Soul Groove Radio]

The Soul Emperor's selections of the latest releases broadcast on Sun 23rd Oct 2022 on Soul Groove Radio.

It's interesting, as a certain DJ is now belatedly playing Bill Albright "Sitting By The Phone" it is now getting attention when it was posted here on day of release back on 21 Jun 2022! It is more or less a copy of Billy Stewart's classic "Sitting In The Park" with slightly different lyrics. I'll pinch the strap line from the Specsavers advert ... "You should have gone to SoulStrutter" lol!
