Steve Aggasild [2022-08-02] - SoulAndJazzFlavas [Soul Groove Radio]

The first Tuesday edition of Soul & Jazz Flavas show from 'The Soul Master' Steve Aggasild on Soul Groove Radio 2nd Aug 2022.

From this week Steve swapped his Thursday afternoon show to Tuesday nights between 22:00-24:00 (BST/UK Time). Monday's show is now dedicated to 2022 releases. The first hour is a 2022 retrospective of some of the best tunes of the year so far and this week he featured many songs from Jan/Feb. The last three songs of the first hour are still slow jams but from 2022. The second hour is all the best new and recent week's releases.

His Tuesday night show's format is still being decided but the first Tuesday of each month will be entirely slow jams starting with this week's show. He has set the bar high with some essential listening including one of my personal all time favourites, an album only track from 1982 by Sheree Brown .. sheer class!

If you have yet to listen to Steve's shows please do take a listen as he is one of the best UK soul radio presenters around with a 40 year pedigree.

Garland Green [1969] - Jealous Kind Of Fella [Uni #55143]

Garland Green's biggest hit and his only Billboard Hot 100 entry (#20) which resulted in a superb album with the same title "Jealous Kind Of Fella" being released on Uni in 1969.

It was his fourth single, and first on Uni, with his earlier ones on Revue still in demand these days by the Northern Soul scene. "Girl I Love You", originally released on Jo Armstead's Gamma label (also released by the song's writer Shelley Fisher on Dayla in 1972), would definitely be in my all time top 100 NS tunes along with "Ain't That Good Enough" covered later by The Spinners lead man John Edwards. Both tracks are included on the album which I may get around to posting some day. I still have the original vinyl which I doubt I'll ever part with. It's not big bucks to find on vinyl (around £50 should get a VG+ copy). It was reissued on CD in 1995 with two bonus tracks from his later Spring catalogue, one of the tracks released on Hit And Run in 2020 by Don Varner which was previously unreleased from 1967 "He Didn't Know (He Kept On Talking)". Well worth tracking down.

Little Royal (aka Royal Torrence) covered it in 1972 as "Jealous" which was also the title of his one and only album. The single release was billed as Little Royal & The Swingmasters.

In 2012 Green re-recorded it for an album "I Should've Been The One". I found some footage of him singing it live (although I suspect that the sound has been overdubbed or he is PA'ing and obviously recorded much later). Also a video of a TV appearance on 'Soul Street'  by Little Royal which has a young Millie Jackson at the beginning. Soul Street was a show produced, hosted and syndicated by Kenny Smith (of "Lord What's Happening To Your People" fame) based in Cincinnati, OH.

Danny Toeman [2022] - When The Lights Go Down [LRK Records #LRK-16]

This year has proved fruitful for Danny Toeman with his last single "Shake the Blues" receiving airplay on BBC Radio 2, headlining a string of sold out shows, and supporting Diana Ross on one of her UK appearances.

To date, in addition to Diana Ross, he has shared the stage with soul luminaries such as Robert Cray, Betty Wright, Charles Bradley and Kool & the Gang.

His new single "When the Lights Go Down" (a firm favourite in his live performances) is inspired by Philly Soul and is due for release by LRK Records, digitally on 19 Aug, with pre-orders being taken then for a limited edition vinyl release scheduled for 23 Sep. A video for the song will feature retro dance troupe The Meyer Dancers.

The feel-good track combines an orchestral mix of funk, soul, and disco with wry lyrics about finding the keys to the heart of a woman who just can’t be satisfied! It was co-written with David Albury, who is currently starring as Bob Marley in the musical 'Get Up, Stand Up, on London’s West End. He also contributes backing vocals, alongside Durga McBroom, famed backing vocalist for Pink Floyd. Mixing duties were taken up by Vince Chiarito in New York, whose credits include Black Pumas, and Eli 'Paperboy' Reed.

I've also included a video for "She's Got Something About Her", his first single on LRK from 2020.

If you want to catch Danny live he has a few upcoming gigs:
16 Sep: Hootananny, Brixton
6 Nov: The Grand Central, Brighton

Edwin Starr [1978] - Jealous [20th Century Fox #T 559]

Whilst I was researching something else I came across this great album only track "Jealous" by Edwin Starr co-written with Motown legend Lamont Dozier. I don't recall hearing it before so thought it was worthwhile posting.

It's from his 1978 album "Clean" just as he was moving towards disco material with "Contact" which is on the album, and "H.A.P.P.Y. Radio" and such like.

The album is very cheap and easy to pick up but this is about the only track that stands the test of time with several disco tracks. "I'm So Into You" is ok but a bit pedestrian.

A quick scan through the credits on the album and arrangers included H. B. Barnum, David Blumberg, Lamont Dozier and Paul Riser and musicians included David T. Walker (guitar), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion) and James Gadson (drums) so some heavyweights involved in the album's production.

Calvin Harris Feat. Normani, Offset, Tinashe [2022] - New To You [Columbia]

At last this week a new release that we can finally get our teeth into. It was actually released on Friday, in theory, but I certainly didn't see it in Friday's releases as if I had it would surely have been posted as this is one of the best new tunes heard for some time with 'instant' appeal which I fully expect to do very well indeed. I think this has got across the board appeal with Philly style strings yet contemporary vocals.

It comes from Scottish producer Calvin Harris with assistance from Normani, Offset and Tinashe. Normani (Kordei) and Tinashe share the lead vocals with Offset on the rap(ish) section.

Calvin Harris (Adam Richard Wiles) is from Dumfries, born in 1984, who started making recordings in his bedroom in 1999. Two of his songs were later released in 2002 using the name Stouffer.

Normani was a member of girl group Fifth Harmony who were formed on X Factor (season 2).

Tinashe (Jorgenson Kachingwe), of course, is a solo artist in her own right since 2012.

Offset is Kiari Kendrell Cephus who is one third of rap group Migos.

This track, "New To You", along with another single "Stay With Me" released on 17 Jul (featuring Justin Timberlake, Halsey & Pharrell Williams) and two others previously released singles ("New Money" (1 Jul) and "Potion" (27 May)) will be included on a new album "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2" due on Friday (5 Aug).
