Mack Moses [2022] - Coloured Floors [Neonami] (Full Album)

Melbourne's Mack Moses releases his sophomore album "Coloured Floors" today (24 Jun 2022) which follows his debut album "Cassandra" from 2019. In conjunction, the new single from it is "Cool" for which a video premiered earlier today.

The first two tracks "Jump The Broom" (Apr) and "Back Home" (Feb) have already been released as singles and both are throwback boogie funk tracks with "Jump the Broom" a bit reminiscent of Bruno Mars "Uptown Funk", to my ears at least!

In other parts of the album he sounds like Jamiroquai, on "Into The Night" in particular.

It's more of a dance/funk album than soul but, on a day when good quality releases are not particularly easy to come by, I thought it worth posting.

Milan Jackson [2022] - High Talk (Misfit Mixtape LP) [Booked And Busy]

Here's yet another that uses THAT sample. I'm afraid "High Talk" its the only track worthy of posting from Milan Jackson's "Misfit Mixtape" album released last week (17 Jun 2022) as most of it is R&B/Hip Hop and explicit.

Arthur Ponder [2022] - The Prince of Georgia Soul [Athens Of The North] (Full Album)

Today sees a couple of 'essential' album releases by Euan Fryer's, Edinburgh based, Athens Of The North label.

On this one, as often the case, there is a link to the Bar-Kays post as Arthur Ponder, from Macon, GA, replaced Otis Redding in The Pinetoppers (which also included as a member Wayne Cochran) when Redding left to pursue a solo career around 1962.

Ponder only released around four singles and his first wasn't until 1970 "Dr. Strangelove" on the highly regarded Crow label out of Detroit owned by Eugene Davis which got wider distribution via Capricorn. A second release on Crow (probably early 70s)  "Oh Baby Why You Want To Make Me Cry" /  "Let's Get Together For The Wrong We Have Done" are both deep soul tunes. All the Crow releases were written by (or at least credited to) Davis with the latter two sides included on this compilation.

It then wasn't until 1985 that he released further material as part of a group named Side Show "Lonely Girl" / "You Are The One For Me", both songs written by Ponder with Willie Smith (who was a member of The Mighty Chevelles who released an album on Eugene Davis's Flying Arrow in 1977) and feature on the comp. The original vinyl on Trey sells for around £250-£350.

The same year he released another single on Macon label Muscadine, "Sexy Lady" / "My Love",  both sides co-written with J.B.'s member Robert Coleman.

The only other (known/listed) released recording by him was in 1988 "You Talk Too Much" on another Macon label Sky Hawk released in 1988 as Arthur 'Bo' Ponder, which is also included on the comp.

So that leaves three previously unreleased tracks: "If You Want My Love", "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" and "It's You Girl".

Ike Noble & The Uptights [2022] - Look A Little Higher [Athens Of The North] (Full Album)

A new compilation of songs titled "Look A Little Higher" by Ike Noble & The Uptights released today (24 Jun 2022) by Athens Of The North.

The Up Tights were formed by Henry Bradley in Forrest City, Arkansas in March of 1967 while most of the band members were attending Lincoln High School. They took their name from Stevie Wonder's 1966 song.

Their first recording was as Noble and The Up Tights in 1966 "Don't Worry About It" / "Lonely Man" on  Memphis' Action Records, Noble being Izear 'Ike' Noble Jr. who sang and wrote both songs, neither of which feature on this compilation.

When Henry Bradley was drafted to Vietnam in 1968 his guitar duties were performed by his brother Arthur. They released the first version of "It's Just A Dream" along with "Henry's Guitar" as The Up-Tights on Solid Beat. I'm assuming that this was released around 1968 after Henry was drafted as the label scan on Discogs has Arthur Bradley's name hand written on it. The scant details on the label, and with it being the only listed recording for the label, indicates that it is most likely a private press.

Through hiring manager John Mitchell the group were introduced to Joe Lee who owned Variety recording studio in Jonesboro, Arkansas and the Alley label. They cut two songs written by Ike Noble, "Look A Little Higher" and an updated version of "Just a Dream", on Alley Records in 1968. Lee continued to experiment in the studio and produced many versions of the group’s original songs, adjusting the mix and adding elements to each unique take, hence the several alternate cuts feature on this compilation.

The next Alley release, billed as only Ike Noble, were two Charles 'Jamie' Holmes songs "It's Bad" / "That's What I Get". Curiously both Discogs and 45Cat date this as 1967 but the catalogue number is higher (1058) than the previous single (1045) dated 1968! "It's Bad" has become a very in-demand tune in recent years since UK rare soul dealer/DJ John Manship started championing it at Sunday soul sessions at Feed Your Soul in Newark.

Another Holmes song, "There’s Gonna Be a Better Day Coming", remained unreleased but was released by Soul7 in 2014 along with another three tracks "How Long Must I Wait For You", paired with the latter, and "That's The Sound Of My Heart" / "That's What I Get" which are all included on the compilation.

Apparently, Stax Records was interested in signing the group and wanted to re-record "It's Bad", but they ultimately passed since they generally had a policy of working with Memphis based groups.

Ike Noble continued to record into the 70s and 80s and an Ike Noble Discography was posted in April 2020 which contains several of these recordings and his later material.

Men At Large [2022] - Love Benefits [Wyde Load Ent] (Full Album)

Men At Large have pre-released a couple of singles from their forthcoming album over the last few weeks, the title track "Love Benefits" and the best track "Faded". The full album is released today.

They were originally duo David Tolliver and James 'Jayshawn' Champion from Cleveland, OH, who were discovered by fellow Clevelander Gerald Levert. They released their first (self-titled) album in 1992 and went on to record three further albums until 2007 when the split. They went their separate ways with Champion going the gospel route recording with Kirk Franklin, and also releasing a solo album, and Tolliver recording with a couple of groups.

In 2016 Tolliver reactivated the group with Edgar 'Gemini' Porter and released a single "Date Night". The new single will be their third since then. I note that Champion shares writing credits with Tolliver on the last two singles, so given that Edgar Porter is now deceased, I am guessing that he must have rejoined the duo.

Their biggest hit was  the slow jam "So Alone" from their debut album which reached #31 Hot 100 and #5 R&B in 1993.
