Jack Montgomery - Discography

Jack Montgomery was a stage name given to Marvin Tyrone Jones by Don Mancha.  He recorded 4 45s on 4 different labels between 1966 and 1970.  He also wrote or co-wrote most of them (as M. Jones) and also wrote a couple of tracks for Satisfaction Unlimited's  1972 album 'Think Of The Children' on Hot Wax  - Come On Back and  I Know It's Love.

This record was originally known/played for the other side Do You Believed It.  I'm not sure exactly when someone decided to flip it over and play this side, but it has been played for at least 30 years (and more) and is still an absolute floorpacker whenever it is played to this day. This would definitely have to be in my Top 100 Northern Soul records.

This featured on the very first Northern Soul compilation album 'Disco Demand's Solid Soul Sensations' compiled by Blackpool Mecca DJ Ian Levine back in March 1975 on Pye Disco Demand which featured tracks from Scepter/Wand vaults..

An oldie that has been reactivated in recent years and as a result prices have soared to as high as £300 for a promo.  I've had the promo since mid 70s and guess I would have only paid about a quid or so for it!  ... not a bad return as with inflation a £1 in 1976 is now worth £7.25?

Jack Montgomery [196?] - Beauty Isn't Born [Auston's A-0001]

Self-written (as M. Jones) ballad.  It is the only known/listed release on the label which was based in Royal Oak, Detroit, Michigan which I would hazard a guess is a self-released 45.  It's not listed on 45Cat and Discogs gives no release date.  It certainly sound later than his other 3 45s and not typical of his other recordings.  It's got a Terry Callier feel about it almost folky in style. 

The flip side is an instrumental of the A side.  It was also released on a green label with silver text.  I don't know  which is the 1st press.

Juanita Williams - Discography

Juanita Williams (aka  La Wanda William) released three solo 45s on Ke Ke 1964, Golden World 1964 and Wingate 1965.  She formed The Honey Bees with sister Barbara Ann Williams and Mary 'Stegall' Lewis in 1967 and recorded a promo (very rare and in-demand) 45 on Garrison which is a great double-sider. Not to be confused with another group called The Honey Bees / Honeybees who were also known as The Cookies (as well as The Cinderellas and The Palisades).

Presumably she must have stayed active or returned to the music business as she next appeared in 1994 with a blues album 'Introducing Juanita Williams' released on Big Mo.

Early 60s Detroit girl sound written by Lee Rodgers.

The only other 'known/listed' 45 on Ke Ke was Melvin Davis - Wedding Bells / It's No News but Cat No is 1007 ... so perhaps there are unknown releases still to be found?  A gospel album was released on the label by The Mighty Voices Of Thunder recorded at United Sound Studios.

Golden World is a much loved label on the Northern Soul scene as it produced some classic Detroit Northern Soul dance tunes.

A song written by Van McCoy originally recorded as a B side to Half A Heart by Little) Esther Phillips in 1964 and also recorded by Irma Thomas in 1965 and in UK by Calvin James (a pseudonym for George Underwood) on Columbia who formed The King Bees and The Mannish Boys with David Bowie.

Written by Don Mancha & Edwin Starr.  Never officially released - promo only?

We've had a discussion re Garrison label on the blog previously (on Jimmey Raye post if I recall correctly).  I think I picked up from Discogs that it was a Pasadena, Texas label to which Winsford (aka Johnny) Terry had connections which I questioned as Johnny Terry was married to Eddie & Brian Holland's sister, Carol,  and lived in Detroit.  Here's yet another Detroit connection. 

Further info culled from comments on 45Cat states that Garrison was owned by Pete Garris (not Garrison as previously stated) who was head of Scepter/Wand promotions at the time. He then moved to Dot, Kapp, Uni and then Brunswick for most of the 70s.  He was named in the payola law suit against Brunswick in 1977. He died of heart attack in 1986.

It's believed that Travier Music (publisher) was owned by Don Mancha and a local motel owner Don Montgomery who had a moted called Traveler.

Both sides were produced by Don Mancha, Jack Montgomery & Johnny Terry and arranged by Mike Terry, all stalwart Detroit musician so contradicts the Texas theory!

There's a story on Soul Source from Rob Moss (Hayley records) of the find of Johnny Terry acetate collection near Detroit in 2012 which further compounds the Texas claim.

Written by Fred Bridges and Richard Beasley. The backing track was recorded earlier and put out as the flip to Jack Montgomery's - Don't Turn Your Back On Me on Barracuda  (owned by Don Mancha & Don Montgomery).BRC-101 in 1967. The vocals were added and the track was recorded and released by The Honey Bees on Garrison.

Johnnie Taylor - Beverly Glen Discography

Johnnie Taylor is an artist sadly neglected by a UK pop audience with his only UK chart entry being Disco Lady from 1976 (#25).  He fared  better in US with 6 Top 30 Billboard hits (2 Top 10 Disco Lady #1 & Who's Making Love #5). He is probably best known to a soul audience for his 60/70s sides on Stax and then Columbia when Stax went bust.  Between 1982-84 he released 2 albums ('Just Ain't Good Enough' 1982 and 'Best Of The Old And New' 1984) on Beverly Glen which spawned 4 singles. After this short period on Beverly Glen Taylor recorded for Malaco until his death in 2000.

What a roster this LA label (founded by Otis 'Let Her Go' Smith) had in the 80s Johnnie Taylor, Bobby Womack (The Poet trilogy of albums), Anita Baker (The Songstress album) and Chapter 8.

He didn't have that many big tunes on the Northern Soul scene that stand out in my memory but probably the biggest was Friday Night on Stax but others played included I Ain't Particular, Oh How I Love You, Toe Hold.  There are probably a few others which I can't recall at present.  Who's Making Love probably got spins at The Twisted Wheel on release.

The 3 standout tracks are What About My Love sampled by Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme which topped the UK pop charts in July 2004 and spent 25 weeks on the charts. Just Ain't Good Enough and Shoot For The Stars.  Other recommended tracks are I'm So Proud (a mellow ballad/stepper), Don't Wait (deep soul ballad/stepper) and Seconds Of Your Love (80s modern soul dancer penned by Sam Dees & Ron Kersey).  Reaganomics and I Need A Freak are funky numbers that do nothing for me.

The only track on the 2 albums that didn't get a 45 release was Hey For The Winners which sounds to me like a poppy number which reminds me a lot of Doobie Brothers - What A Fool Believes.  What About My Love and Just Ain't Good Enough featured on both albums.

Joey Gilmore was predominantly a blues man but did cut a few soul/funk records early in his career.  This is his first 45 released on Miami independent label Saadia owned by Frank & Martha Williams. Frank Williams was part of The Rocketeers with Willie Hale who backed Helene Smith on Thrills & Chills on Lloyd.

A nice doble-sider with a mellow crossover / stepper on top side with a funky, driving Northern Soul tune on the flip.

One of only around 8 45s released on what I believe must be a New Orleans label as many of the releases involved D.C. Wardell (an alias for Wardell Quezergue) and/or other NOLA musicians/writers e.g. The Barons, Allen Orange, Joseph Broussard (wrote Pointer Sisters Send Him Back with Richard Caiton), Ralph Williams, Charles (Chuck) Simmons, Carrol Washington etc.

There were several soul groups recording under The Jades name in the mid 60s e.g. on on Uni and an LA group on Capitol, Imperial, Liberty, and several other white rock/garage bands but I'm pretty certain that this is a different group to the one that that released the stomper I'm Where It's At on Nite Life who sound blue-eyed.
